It’s official – Newcastle United are a club in crisis. Expectations were high going into this season, with the club having qualified for the UEFA Champions League for the first time in over two decades. Newcastle also reached the final of the Carabao Cup, with Manchester United beating them to win the trophy. It was indeed a great campaign last season.
However, things have since gone sour. The club are out of the UCL group stage and are ninth in the league, having won just one of their last five games, losing the remaining four. Will Newcastle be sacking Eddie Howe to appoint Michel Sanchez, who’s doing wonders at Girona?
Is Newcastle going to sack Eddie Howe?
Despite having the backing of Saudi oil money and having completed the takeover in 2021, it’s very safe to say Newcastle have been largely overachieving, and Eddie Howe is the man to thank for that. The Magpies made an unexpected return to the Champions League after finishing fourth in the Premier League last season.
Firstly, had they been drawn in a different group other than the one with PSG, AC Milan, and Newcastle, they would have made it to the qualifying stages of the UCL; after all, they went unbeaten against Kylian Mbappe-led PSG and even completed a 4-1 rout over the Parisiens in Tyneside.
The team is probably burned out by UCL participation, which has translated into a poor run of form in the league. Injuries haven’t helped Eddie Howe either, with his team suffering from big injuries to big players, including Nick Pope and Callum Wilson, and even a lengthy ban for Sandro Tonali, who was involved in a high-profile betting scandal.
While it’s not sure what Newcastle will do, it appears as though they will fully back Eddie Howe, who has been more than incredible since joining the club in 2021.
Newcastle interested in bringing in Michel Sanchez
Recent reports are suggesting that Newcastle are seriously looking into sacking Eddie Howe, and while this will disrupt the balance of the team, considering how much respect he commands in the dressing room, it cannot be ruled out.
Eddie Howe’s potential replacement is the man who’s doing wonders in Spain with Girona. Nobody thought Girona would be challenging for the top four in La Liga this season, let alone mount a title challenge. However, that’s the reality, and the Manchester City affiliate club could challenge the status quo in Spain come the end of the season.
Michel Sanchez has already overseen the defeat of two of their title challengers this season, with victories over Atletico Madrid and Barcelona.
