The Rock made his highly-anticipated return to WWE on Friday Night SmackDown. His surprise appearance sent shockwaves through the wrestling world as fans hadn’t seen the megastar in nearly four years. Following his return, The Great One discussed his canceled WrestleMania 39 match and the possibility of facing his cousin, Roman Reigns.
During his appearance, The Rock interrupted a segment involving Pat McAfee and Austin Theory. He engaged in a war of words with Theory and silenced him with one of his iconic catchphrases. The Brahma Bull then delivered a People’s Elbow to the 26-year-old superstar, which garnered the loudest reaction of the night.
The Rock sparks speculation of WM 40 match vs Reigns
Appearing on the Pat McAfee Show on ESPN, The Rock delved into the topic of facing his cousin Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 40.
The Great One stated that he is ‘open’ to the idea of facing Reigns, fueling speculation that such a match could become a reality. Originally, The Brahma Bull was scheduled to go head-to-head with The Tribal Chief at WrestleMania 39, but the match was canceled due to creative differences.
Instead, Reigns defended his Universal Championship against Cody Rhodes in the second night of WrestleMania 39. It had been speculated that WWE might rebuild Rhodes and set up a rematch with Reigns at WrestleMania 40. However, after The Rock’s comments last night, it seems there’s another option on the table.
The Rock’s last official wrestling match in WWE was against John Cena at WrestleMania 29, where he lost the WWE Championship to The Cenation Leader. Since then, he has made a few appearances, including a match against Erick Rowan at WrestleMania 32 in 2016, where The Great One secured a victory in mere seconds.
Dwayne Johnson reveals WM 39 match was âlocked inâ
Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson confirmed on the Pat McAfee Show that he was slated to face Reigns at this year’s WrestleMania. He mentioned having reached a handshake deal and verbal agreement with Vince McMahon and Nick Khan in early 2022 to headline WrestleMania 39. However, as The Great One explained, they couldn’t agree on the next part of the storyline.
Johnson also expressed his desire to create something special for the fans, with his match against Reigns at WrestleMania being part of a larger storyline. Unfortunately, he couldn’t come to an agreement with McMahon regarding the storyline, leading to its cancellation. While it was initially speculated that Johnson’s absence from the event was due to scheduling conflicts, it appears there were other factors at play.
The Rock has since mentioned that he’s open to facing Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 40 next year, scheduled to be in Philadelphia. Although their match at this year’s April Extravaganza would have been fitting given the Hollywood theme, a clash between these two megastars at next year’s Mania would also be highly anticipated. Stay tuned for further updates on The Rock and WWE.
