Jaguars WR Zay Jones’ set to appear in court after Monday’s domestic battery arrest

The Jacksonville Jaguars, led by quarterback Trevor Lawrence and wide receiver Zay Jones, are going strong in the 2023 NFL season. The team proudly sits in the first spot of the competitive division AFC South with a 6-3 record. After starting the season with a big win they went down in the next two consecutive games but geared up themselves in the following games to pick up back-to-back wins.

However, after defeating the Pittsburgh Steelers with some controversial decisions from the NFL officials, the Jaguars went down in their recent match against the San Francisco 49ers. Now, they have one more reason to be disappointed as Zay Jones had been arrested in Florida ahead of their Week 11 match against the Tennessee Titans.

Court date set for Zay Jones

According to a Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office inmate report, Jones was detained Monday on a misdemeanor domestic battery charge causing bodily harm, which is a first-degree misdemeanor. At 6:03 p.m. ET, he was booked into the Duval County Jail and his first court appearance before a judge is set for 9 a.m. on Tuesday.

For conducting a first-degree misdemeanor in the location, a person is punishable by “up to 180 days in jail and up to a $1,000 fine” along with “court costs, restitution, probation, treatment and/or community service”, per AP News. The Jaguars team issued a statement on Monday evening saying they had no comment on the incident.

“We are aware of the situation and are in the midst of gathering information. We will have no further comment at this time.”

After being selected by the Buffalo Bills in the second round of the 2017 NFL Draft, Zay Jones is currently in his seventh season in the league and recorded 261 receptions, 2,785 yards along with 18 touchdowns throughout 98 games. He got inked by the Jaguars to a three-year, $24 million deal in March of 2022, and is in the second year of the contract.

Jones was ruled out for previous game

After catching five passes for 55 yards along with a touchdown in Week 5, Jones aggravated his knee injury in the second half of the match. He didn’t participate in practice afterward and was ruled out for the team’s contest against the San Francisco 49ers on Friday.

The Jaguars’ head coach Doug Pederson said the veteran had been “doing better” as he was a limited participant in practice last week after several weeks of not practicing.

“We’ll give him one more day today and see, probably a long shot but we’ll see. He’s doing better,” he said via SI.com.

The Jaguars season-opening was the only match where the WR played the entire four quarters in a healthy state. He initially injured his knee in the Jaguars match against the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 2 and resumed play after a brief absence.

However, the receiver later missed the Week 3 and Week 4 campaigns before returning in the next week and flaming up the injury again in the second half of the week 5 match. He appeared in only three games this season and recorded five catches for 55 yards along with two touchdowns.
