Jamie Carragher’s punditry career may have made many forget how wonderful a playing career he had. One of those very few one-club players, Jamie Carragher’s loyalty to Liverpool was unmatched, and while the Englishman was not the best technical defender, he made up for it with other abilities, such as doggedness.
Carragher’s new career means that he’ll say things current players and managers won’t like, and such has been the case. However, some of the things he said about City didn’t go down well with Guardiola, with the City manager pointing out how the former Liverpool defender doesn’t have a PL title to his name. Jamie Carragher has now clapped back.
Pep Guardiola slams media pundits
Pep Guardiola’s outspokenness with the media has always been second to none. The City manager may not always use the right words, like Jurgen Klopp, as highlighted by his decision to call Wolves’ Hwang Hee-chan “the Korean guy,” but his media handling abilities make him one of the most media-friendly managers in the Premier League, unless it’s with pundits.
In Guardiola’s recent rant, he took a sly dig at Sky Sports pundits, naming names like Micah Richards, a former City player, Gary Neville, a former United player, and Jamie Carragher, a former Liverpool player.
After drawing another big game against Tottenham Hotspur, City were criticized for being complacent, having won the league five times in six seasons. However, City manager Pep Guardiola was quick to play down the claim of complacency in the City team, throwing a dig at Sky Sports pundits in the process.
“I know here when we don’t win, there’s complacency, and you don’t have character. Then when you win, it’s because we still have hunger. Maybe I’m wrong, but I don’t think it’s about complacency,” Guardiola said.
“I have a feeling that if we maintain this level, we’ll win the Premier League again. He knows how difficult it is; otherwise, Gary Neville would have won four Premier Leagues in the best period of Manchester United, but he didn’t do it, you know? Jamie Carragher didn’t win one once. Micah Richards didn’t win four Premier Leagues in a row. It never happened,” Guardiola went on.
Some of Guardiola’s claims may not have been well researched, as Gary Neville won eight Premier League titles with Manchester United in a trophy-laden career. He also won two Champions League trophies in 1999 and 2008.
Jamie Carragher lashes out at Pep Guardiola
Guardiola’s claim about Carragher’s failure to win the Premier League during his time at Liverpool didn’t sit well with him, and the Liverpool legend went on a social media rant to provide the perfect rebuttal for the Manchester City manager.
“I think I’d have probably won one if Liverpool were owned by a nation-state and pushed the rules so far that the PL charges us 115 times,” Carragher wrote.
“I was actually praising Pep’s team after the game on Sunday,” the Liverpool legend, who actually did not win any Premier League title in his career, concluded.
Jamie Carragher’s punditry career has put him at loggerheads with some of the big names in the sport, with Messi once sending a private message to the former Liverpool defender to call him a ‘donkey’ after a fresh round of criticism.
Carragher also had a row with Cristiano Ronaldo last year, prompting the Real Madrid legend to snub him physically while greeting other former players around him, including ex-teammates Roy Keane and Gary Neville.
Punditry is a very controversial occupation, which is how these extensive TV networks make their money. Pundits like Carragher and other Sky Sports big names have to deliver harsh criticisms sometimes to get their points across.
Can City really win the Premier League four times in a row by the end of the season?
