The New York Jets traded for the Green Bay Packers’ four-time MVP Aaron Rodgers with the aim of getting rid of their prolonged playoff drought. However, the quarterback sustained a season-ending injury in week 1 of the 2023 NFL season, and the team also got embroiled in a losing streak.
While A-Rod is recovering from the injury, the Jets have also somehow managed to gear up themselves as they picked up three consecutive victories before going down to the Los Angeles Chargers in the recent game. Zach Wilson is trying to fill the void left by Rodgers, but he is not living up to the expectations of the NFL community. However, the team had decided to stay committed to A-Rod’s backup.
Jets committed Zach Wilson as QB1
Gang Green’s fans have been urging the team to change Wilson and give a new quarterback the role to lead the offense. The signal-caller is well aware of the jabs and even shaded his critics after securing a 13-10 overtime victory over the New York Giants.
Given the fact that the Giants are a below-average team, the fans aren’t convinced of the young star’s caliber. On top of that, the Jets just embraced a poor 6-27 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers. Now, sports enthusiasts have come up with a stronger claim to assign the quarterbacking job to another player.
However, according to Sunday’s report by Dianna Russini of The Athletic, the franchise has not seen enough of the former BYU standout and decided to let him be their QB1 in the upcoming games via Heavy. He currently has the league’s longest pass attempt streak without an interception, and even the team’s front office members are reportedly happy with his performance.
Following the Jets’ blowout loss to the Chargers, NFL legend Troy Aikman slammed the Jets QB while discussing how he failed to capitalize on an easy throw on a second-and-6 on the opening drive of the contest. However, the team’s head coach Robert Saleh has unwavering commitment towards him, and seemingly, no change in their QB room is coming soon.
Who has the longest active playoff drought in the NFL?
The Jets hold the misfortune of having the longest active playoff drought in the NFL at 12 seasons. After appearing in back-to-back AFC Championship Game in the 2009 and 2010 seasons, they couldn’t make any further appearances. The team’s last one-decade history is full of disappointments, as it possesses a 70-124 record and finished in last place in the AFC East for the seventh time throughout the last 12 years.
The 2023 NFL season can be a comeback year for the team, although their struggle on the offensive side has been prevalent. Gang Green’s run defense ranks 30th in the league at 137.3 yards per game, and their QB1’s performance has also been lackluster.
Meanwhile, the Jets’ defensive side’s players were the protagonists behind their recent wins. The team’s D-line ranked ninth in total defense, third in passing defense, fourth in red-zone defense, and tied for eighth in scoring. However, this line alone will not be enough to break the team’s prolonged playoff drought.
