John Cena’s unscripted shot at The Rock on live tv once shocked WWE

Dwayne Johnson aka The Rock and John Cena are two of the biggest stars in the history of WWE. Their initial feud later turned into one of the biggest rivalries in all of pro wrestling. The whole thing began after Cena slammed Johnson for turning his back on the company that provided him the major spotlight.

Though wrestling segments are usually scripted, recently former WWE writer Brian Gewirtz revealed how almost nobody knew about John Cena going off-script at The Rock during the height of their rivalry.

John Cena took an unscripted shot at The Rock

John Cena was the face of WWE for about a decade from 2006 to 2016 and made a ton of money for the company throughout the Ruthless Aggression as well as the PG era of WWE. During that time, he feuded with numerous top stars on the roster including the likes of CM Punk, Kurt Angle, The Rock etc.

During the 2008 to 2009 period, John Cena called out The Rock for leaving WWE and going to Hollywood, while he still was actively competing in the rings.

From 2011 to 2013, WWE was dominated by The Rock VS John Cena matches. This rivalry is one of the most profitable rivalries in the history of WWE. In terms of the financial gain of WWE, The Rock, and John Cena have sold over 3 million Pay-Per-View’s buys. WrestleMania 27, WrestleMania 28, and WrestleMania 29 were sold mostly due to this rivalry.

During a recent episode of the Masked Man Show, former WWE writer Brian Gewirtz talked about a segment on Monday Night RAW when Cena took a shot at The Rock by revealing a custom-made ‘I Bring It via Satellite’ t-shirt. Gewirtz revealed Cena didn’t inform anyone about the shirt beforehand.

“During the whole Rock-Cena deal where Cena came out and did not tell me or really anyone that he had made up an ‘I Bring It via Satellite’ t-shirt that he unveiled live on the air and then was nice enough to roll it into a ball and just fling it in my face as hard as he could when he got back through the curtain while I’m sitting there on the headset. But that was kind of like the, hey, we’re in a war/shoot/whatever. You gotta do what you gotta do to stay alive.” said Gewritz.

Why did John Cena return to WWE?

John Cena shocked a lot of fans when he surprisedly made a return at WWE Money in the Bank 2023 in London. While some fans may have wanted him to announce a match, The Leader of The Cenation was actually in the arena to try and bring WrestleMania to London, England.

However, John Cena didn’t just come to interact with the fans. He also had a verbal confrontation with Grayson Waller, one of the rising stars in the business. After Cena was done hyping the audience at WWE Money in the Bank 2023, Waller interrupted him and suggested promoting WrestleMania in Australia instead of England.

Waller is an Australian, so he naturally wanted a WrestleMania in his country. However, John Cena didn’t let him speak much and started to talk to the audience again. After Waller hit him with a blindsided attack, he quickly stood up and hit Waller with an Attitude Adjustment.

The two could have a match against each other down the road. While nothing is confirmed, chances of London hosting a WrestleMania have certainly increased to a great extent.

But with WrestleMania 40 set for Philadelphia, and rumors of WrestleMania 41 going to Minneapolis, it could be years before WWE is able to deliver an actual UK mega event..
