Jurgen Klopp turns the table on £168m midfield duo who snubbed Liverpool for Chelsea in the summer: ‘My god, were lucky, eh?’

Jurgen Klopp is one of the best managers in the world, and there are results to show for it. However, Klopp’s Liverpool had a bad period last season, missing out on the top four and only earning a spot to play in this season’s Europa League. This season has been great for Klopp, as the Reds sit at the top of the Premier League table.

Everyone expected Liverpool to struggle this season, as they missed out on some top targets like Moise Caicedo and Romeo Lavia. However, with consistent showings that have helped them to the top of the league, Klopp subtly took a swipe at Chelsea’s midfield duo Caicedo and Romeo Lavia.

Jurgen Klopp takes slight dig at Chelsea midfield duo

Moises Caicedo was Liverpool’s primary target for the defensive midfield position after the Reds had lost Jordan Henderson, Fabinho, and Naby Keita to other clubs. However, Brighton’s valuation of Caicedo was more than what Liverpool were willing to pay.

A few weeks down the line, the Reds matched Caicedo’s valuation, only for the Seagulls to reach an agreement with Chelsea, who had offered more incentives for the Colombian midfielder.

Liverpool quickly turned their attention to Romeo Lavia, another outstanding talent from Southampton. However, the lack of enthusiasm from the Reds left the Saints with no option but to sell the player to Chelsea.

With Liverpool doing way better than Chelsea this season, Klopp has subtly taken a dig at the midfield duo, claiming the Reds may have been lucky to have missed out on them.

“The summer, we had a few strange things happen in the transfer market, but here, between us, I can say, ‘My God, we were lucky, eh?’.

“We didn’t know that at that moment, and it didn’t feel like it at that moment, but yeah, I’m really happy that it worked out, but you never know before.

“We obviously realized that other central defensive midfielders didn’t want to join Liverpool, but we found Endo. He’s an exceptional player,” Klopp said.

Klopp dethrones Sir Alex Ferguson with latest feat

Jurgen Klopp’s men secured a 2-1 win over Crystal Palace last Sunday, thanks to Harvey Elliot’s late strike in the second half of the game. This was Liverpool’s 17th injury-time winner under Jurgen Klopp in the Premier League, taking him above Sir Alex Ferguson, who was famous for his ‘Fergie Time’ last-minute winners.

“The bad thing about the amount of games we’re playing is that it’s really tiring. The good thing is that everyone gets to play,” the Liverpool manager said.

“It’s tough. These boys play an awful lot of football, and sometimes the inner enemy is louder than it is at other moments. It’s all about the mindset,” he added.

Liverpool, who have had to deal with injuries to first-team players like Alison, Diogo Jota, and Joel Matip, sit at the top of the Premier League table, above the likes of Arsenal, Manchester City, and Aston Villa.
