Kalvin Phillips has had a big downfall in his career that many fans did not expect. He was once one of the best defensive midfielders in the Premier League, starting every game for Leeds United. He was also a regular starter under Gareth Southgate’s England national team.
But he is now nowhere near to those levels, especially since he joined Manchester City in 2022. At the time, being the high prospect he was, he cost the Citizens €50 million. But his current market value is only around €30 million. A lot of fitness issues have prevented him from getting to his best form, and manager Pep Guardiola did not seem to prefer him even as a substitute. The fact that City had a very good squad full of superstars also did not help him.

During their historical treble last season, Kalvin only made a shocking two starts in all games. He played less than 600 minutes total that season as well. He only has 31 appearances in his City career, with only one goal to show for.
To escape his nightmare in Manchester, he made a move to West Ham on loan for this season. But even there, he has only made 8 appearances, with a lot of mistakes made, such as giving away goals and nightmare red card sendoffs. His confidence is said to be very low, and he is desperate to turn around his career.
Kalvin Phillips struggles to make England’s Euro 2024 squad
His club career is also now affecting his chances of playing in the England team ahead of their Euro 2024 tournament in the summer. Kalvin Phillips is one of manager Gareth Southgate’s most preferred players, and he convinced him to move to West Ham to improve his chances of getting into his team.
And due to his still poor performances, he was not chosen to be in the England squad for their recent international break. The manager said there are still chances of him coming back into the fold, “Unfortunately, his form hasn’t been good enough. He has all the attributes to force his way back in, and we’re very keen for him to do that.” It is sad to see a player who impressed for England during their Euro 2020 final run now not get into the team.
Kalvin Phillips can still get into the England squad for the upcoming tournament, but he will need to seriously impress for West Ham in the coming days. He will have that chance when West Ham face Newcastle United in the Premier League on Saturday.
