Kirk Cousins, the former Minnesota Vikings quarterback, has secured a new chapter in his career with the Atlanta Falcons, signing a lucrative four-year contract worth $180 million.
Even before taking his first snap with the Falcons, the vet quarterback stirred up some attention by shedding light on the tampering issues surrounding the Falcons. Nevertheless, he has already caught the eye of one NBA athlete who views him as a role model due to his contract with the Falcons.
In an annual anonymous NBA player poll conducted by The Athletic, one player singled out Kirk Cousins as their favorite current athlete outside of basketball. When asked to elaborate on his choice, the player cited Cousins’ substantial projected career earnings and pointed out his lack of playoff success.
“Kirk Cousins because he gets paid and doesn’t have to win or don’t have to do anything and made $400 million off of one playoff win,” the player’s statement read.
NFL mulls punishment for the Falcons over Kirk Cousins tampering
The Falcons made a bold move to address their struggling offense by bringing in Kirk Cousins, aiming to bolster their chances of reaching the playoffs for the first time since 2017.
Nevertheless, their plans hit a snag when Cousins admitted during his first press conference in Atlanta that the team had direct contact with him before the official start of free agency. This revelation triggered a league investigation into potential tampering by the Falcons.
Recently, ESPN‘s Adam Schefter suggested that the league could announce disciplinary action against the Falcons as early as this week.
Reportedly, the NFL is strongly considering trading the Atlanta team’s first-round pick for the Vikings and taking away a second-round pick from Atlanta in 2025.
Tampering incidents are not uncommon in the NFL, yet they can have serious consequences when exposed. Teams found guilty of tampering may face fines and the loss of draft picks.
Meanwhile, the Falcons have maintained their innocence, with new head coach Raheem Morris and team owner Arthur Blank denying any wrongdoing. Nonetheless, depending on the severity of the punishment handed down to the Falcons, the cost of acquiring the former Vikings player could rise significantly.
