Kylian Mbappe to Real Madrid sounds like a transfer that should happen but has not come to fruition for a long time despite close calls. Since 2107, the two have been linked various times, mainly due to the player’s childhood admiration of the club.
The transfer came close to happening in 2022, but Mbappe decided instead to extend his stay at Paris Saint-Germain. But this season, the saga took another turn as Mbappe decided not to extend his contract. And now positive news has come out regarding the possibility of Real Madrid signing him.
Kylian Mbappe ready to sacrifice £87m for Madrid
Kylian Mbappe will see his current contract end next summer, having publicly decided not to renew it. He can be signed as a free agent then, but he can also confirm an agreement with any club as early as January.
Paris Saint-Germain are still hesitant to let him leave the club but are now somewhat accepting of the fact that he will leave. According to Diario AS, while the French club still wants to offer a new contract, they are not desperate to make him stay against his wishes anymore. While they don’t want to let him leave for free, one of the player’s decisions has changed that stance.
The French national team captain has reportedly decided to forgive around £87 million which the club had to pay him as loyalty bonuses when he signed his new contract in 2022. This agreement with the club helped them in their financial fair play situation, and this was one of the reasons he was allowed to be reinstated to the team after being previously banished. Since a huge amount of money is being saved, it makes up for some of the transfer fees they feel they are entitled to.
Due to Mbappe sacrificing such a huge payment, Real Madrid are increasingly positive that he will join them next summer. Though the club themselves have denied that they are in talks with the player in a recent statement they released on their website.
Madrid reportedly decided on Kylian Mbappe’s jersey number
Though Madrid continues to deny any transfer deals with the player, it was earlier reported the two parties were already in talks. And now Spanish outlet El Chiringuito has reported that the club has already decided what jersey number the Frenchman will wear.
They believe that Kylian Mbappe will be given the No. 10 jersey upon his arrival at the club. Currently, veteran and legend Luka Modric wears it but he is expected to leave when his contract also ends next summer. He has already spoken about the limited game time he has received and could join Inter Miami next summer. In this case, the No. 10 jersey would be free for Mbappe to wear, who already wears it for the French national team.
Mbappe is a big fan of Cristiano Ronaldo, a Real Madrid legend and wears his iconic No. 7 shirt at PSG. But the shirt number now belongs to Vinicius Jr. who has already established himself as a fan favorite there.
