Lamar Odom spent the majority of his 15-year career under the shining LA lights. The gold and glitter around him drove the 2-time NBA Champion to showbiz later on in his career and he consequently fell prey to the side effects. Nightlife, parties, booze—nothing was off limits when it came to Odom.
Following his debut in the NBA, the ex-Lakers forward succumbed to alcohol abuse, leading to consequences shortly thereafter. After discovering his life’s calling, he started contributing to the community, and now his noble mission is even more supported by a pastor from New Mexico.
Lamar Odom receives rehab center from New Mexico pastor
Lamar Odom is a well-known name not only for his on-court achievements but also for his humanitarian work off the court. Once a druggie himself, the former Lakers forward has now dedicated himself to treating addicts.
Recently, a New Mexico Pastor, Anthony Torres gifted him an abandoned property that he could transform into a sanctuary for helping people with fentanyl addiction. The property was first handed over to Torres, but due to financial constraints hindering his ambitions, he decided to transfer it to the former NBA star.
As per reports, the lease will be in Odom’s name and will add to his already existing care center chain. Lamar Odom has been running the Odom Recovery Group along with three rehabilitation centers in California since last year. Odom pledged his life for the people needing help to overcome addiction issues, and his noble work started after his own past experience.
Lamar Odom’s fight against addiction problem
Lamar Odom opened up about his health condition and drug addiction in the ‘Knuckleheads’ podcast. The 44-year-old not only uncovered his drug addiction but also his porn and sex addiction.
On Oct. 13, 2015, he was found senseless in a brothel in Las Vegas. While most people thought the 2-time NBA champion passed out due to a drug overdose, there was a shocking story underneath. Talking about that day, Odom said he remembers having a drink, then he was unconscious and came back to his senses after three days, only to find out that he suffered twelve strokes and six heart attacks.
Speaking with his former teammates Darius Miles and Quentin Richardson in the podcast, Odom said, “When I woke up, they told me I had twelve strokes and six heart attacks, so I’m not even supposed to be here. I’m like, ‘There’s got to be a purpose for me living.’ That’s just scientifically impossible for somebody to have twelve strokes and six heart attacks and be living. I’m like, ‘Must be to give back.'”
So far, Odom Recovery Group has facilities across California in Woodland Hills, Tarzana, Reseda, Sherman Oaks, Porter Ranch, Laguna Hills and San Bernardino. The New Mexico one will be the latest addition and will only benefit Lamar’s cause to drag people out of a dark hole he once fell into.
