Jamal Adams, once a stalwart presence for the New York Jets, embarked on a fresh journey with the Seattle Seahawks in 2020. However, the new journey brought forth a new narrative marked by injuries, contrasting starkly with his Jets tenure.
As the Seahawks concluded the season with a respectable 9-8 record, Adams found himself amidst swirling trade rumors, prompting speculation about his future with the team. Meanwhile, amidst the uncertainty surrounding his tenure with the Seahawks, Adams himself reignited speculation about retirement.
Jamal Adams IG activity sparks retirement speculation
Jamal Adams recently set the rumor mill abuzz with speculations about his potential retirement. The rumors gained more power when Adams shared a post on Instagram, reflecting on his career highlights spanning from his time with the New York Jets to the Seahawks.
Interestingly, this isn’t the first instance where retirement considerations have crossed Adams’ mind. In a candid revelation, he disclosed that retirement had previously been a contemplation.
The catalyst for such thoughts, the 27-year-old explained, was the string of injuries he endured over the past three seasons. He described it as a physical toll that also took a toll on his mental well-being.
“It was tough. I thought about retiring. I thought about a lot of things. Is this going to be it for me? I didn’t know. But I knew eventually, after I got that MRI, I told myself I’m going to be back. I didn’t know when or how, but I was going to figure it out.”
The injury that prompted such introspection occurred during the first half of the 2022 season opener. Adams, in pursuit of a scrambling Russell Wilson, planted his left foot.
Despite the setbacks, after a prolonged absence from the field, he finally marked his return in this season against the New York Giants. Unfortunately, the much-anticipated comeback took an abrupt turn in the first quarter of the Seahawks’ 24-3 victory over the Giants when Adams was forced to exit the game due to a concussion.
The emotional toll of this setback manifested itself in a charged interaction with an on-field neurologist. While Adams later expressed regret for the incident, the NFL remained quick to let him digest a hefty fine.
Jamal Adams’ underwhelming Seahawks career
Jamal Adams’ journey from the Jets to the Seattle Seahawks has been riddled with highs and lows, particularly when it comes to his health and performance on the field. While his tenure with the Jets showcased remarkable durability, with just two missed games over three seasons, his time with the Seahawks has been marred by injuries, causing him to sit out 28 out of a possible 53 regular-season games.
In the 2022 season alone, Adams’ appearances were limited, featuring in only nine games and recording 48 combined tackles, a stark contrast to his previous standout performances. His struggles reached a low point during the 2022 season with the Seahawks, where he managed just three combined tackles. It marked one of the worst statistical seasons of his career.
Despite his recent setbacks, Adams’ early years with the Jets painted a different picture. Throughout his first three seasons in the league, he started all 46 games he played, per Seahawks.com.
During this time, he earned accolades such as second-team AP All-Pro honors in 2018 and a first-team selection in 2019. Additionally, he secured two Pro Bowl appearances during this period.
