Legia Warsaw fans have showcased unwavering loyalty and tenacity, establishing themselves as among the toughest soccer fans globally. The Polish club’s consistent presence in various tiers of European football, including the UEFA Conference League this season, highlights their remarkable journey.
While deeply devoted, the Legia Warsaw ultras’ toughness has surfaced this season, both in domestic and international matches. Recently, their resilience was evident as fans sought to make a statement to UEFA, expressing dissatisfaction with what they perceived as an unjust punishment for a game.
Legia Warsaw ultras unveil NSFW banner during UECL match
It was shocking to see that the famous Zyleta stand, the home of the ultras in the Stadion Wojska Polskiego, was as good as empty for the club’s second-leg game against Molde in the playoffs of the UEFA Conference League yesterday. This was because the stand had been banned from being occupied by fans older than the age of 14.
The ban stemmed from Dutch police alleging that Legia Warsaw fans were involved in a confrontation with the police during their match against AZ Alkmaar in the Netherlands. The report indicated that fans were accused of even knocking out a specific police officer. As a consequence, both teams received punishments for their respective roles in the incident.
However, Legia Warsaw ultras didn’t take it lightly as they began with a tifo banner showing, “This time you won, UEFA,” apparently suggesting that they had conceded the punishment handed to them for the clash in the Netherlands. However, just before the kickoff, another tifo banner was revealed, this time with X-rated words. “Surprise, Mother******,” the banner read.
Legia Warsaw’s unmatched catalogue of tifos
Yesterday’s viral tifo banner wasn’t the first instance of Legia Warsaw fans showcasing their remarkable unity and creativity with large tifo displays in the stadium. A Twitter user shared a photo highlighting the club’s collection of tifo banners over the years, labeling them as the ‘legends of the tifo game.’
Sadly, the lack of support in the stands couldn’t inspire an exciting on-pitch performance, as the Polish side lost 3-0 to Molde, crashing out of the competition despite making it out of the group that also included Aston Villa.
The 3-0 loss made the aggregate score 6-2, as Molde had also won 3-2 in Norway in the first leg of the tie. Molde has now advanced to the round of 16, where they’ll learn their fate after the draw takes place in Switzerland later today.
