Lewis Hamilton has been a prominent figure in the Formula One industry for over a decade, having driven for Mercedes since 2013. Since joining Mercedes, he has experienced the pinnacle of his career, securing seven consecutive titles.
However, now in his forties, it is evident that Hamilton’s time in the paddock may not extend much longer. Reports indicate that Mercedes is already preparing for this inevitable transition and actively considering his successors.
Mercedes chalked out plans for Lewis Hamilton succession
Lewis Hamilton has been a permanent figure in the Mercedes team since 2013, actively being backed up by his team principal, Toto Wolff. However, the British driver is aware that his stay in the team will not be too long from now and is actively focused on his business endeavours as well.
On the other side, Mercedes is also making full preparations for the potential replacement of Hamilton. Andrea Kim Antonelli, at the age of 17, has been linked to Mercedes for Hamilton’s replacement due to his incredible reputation in the junior categories.
The team has fully approved the idea after witnessing Andrea’s potential, which could be a great benefit to them in the future. The young driver has completely skipped Formula 3 and was handed over a Formula 2 seat with Prema for the upcoming 2024 season.
However, if, by any chance, Andrea is unable to compete as a replacement for Hamilton, Mercedes has a backup plan for that too. The head of the Silver Arrows driver program,Gwen Langrue, has revealed that the Alpine driver, Esteban Ocon, is still managed by Mercedes.
He stated, “He’s still very linked to us. He’s an Alpine driver, and he’s fully committed to Alpine, but we’re still managing his career.”
“We have a very good relationship with Alpine and with others.”
Lewis Hamilton’s Mercedes contract
Before signing the contract with Mercedes, Lewis Hamilton was speculated to move to Ferrari constantly for months until Mercedes finally offered a two-year contract until the end of 2025 to Hamilton.
Hamilton’s extension to the team suggested the seven-time World Champion’s willingness to secure an eighth title before he retires, which could become a reality with the help of the W15 car. Although he has confirmed that once he fully retires from the paddock, he has absolutely no intention of coming back to the industry.
