Lionel Messi secured his status as the world’s greatest-ever soccer player when he lifted the World Cup with his beloved Argentina in December 2022. This was Lionel Messi’s second international trophy, and undoubtedly the most important trophy of his entire trophy-laden career.

The 2022 World Cup triumph has taken the former Barcelona and PSG star to new heights. Now regarded as the greatest of all time, Messi’s popularity is soaring, and so is his influence. One of the things he signed in the World Cup final is now hitting the auction floor, where it’s set to be sold for a lot of money.

The auction is currently going on as part of Goldin’s February Auction and will end by March 2, with everyone having an equal chance to land the iconic and historic memorabilia of one of the greatest sportsmen of all time. Lionel Messi played a huge part in Argentina’s World Cup victory in 2022, with the little man scoring two goals in the final plus a penalty when the game entered a shootout.

Messi scored a total of seven goals in the tournament, and he was named the MVP of the World Cup in Qatar. This helped him land his historic eighth Ballon d’Or award, which he won ahead of Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe, and also the FIFA Men’s Player of the Year, ahead of the same competitors.

Messi also became the first soccer player to be named Time Magazine’s Athlete of the Year, thanks to his historic win at the World Cup to land Argentina their first World Cup trophy since 1987 during the days of Diego Maradona.

Most expensive Lionel Messi memorabilia

Lionel Messi’s move to Inter Miami has also helped him extend his reach in the region by a country mile, something that proved helpful when his match-worn shirt from the World Cup final against France hit the market.

This shirt and five more made a collection that sold for $7.8 million, making it one of the most expensive collections of any sportsperson in the entire world. Michael Jordan’s match-worn jersey in his final NBA game holds the record for the most expensive jersey sold, as it was auctioned for a record £8.8 million.

Diego Maradona’s ‘Hand of God’ shirt is also on the list of the most expensive shirts of all time, as it was sold to a mystery buyer for $7.1 million. The identity of the person who bought Messi’s shirt collection is yet to be revealed, but The Athletic claims this may be a good investment opportunity, as sports memorabilia is a booming market today.
