Just when you think Manchester United have hit rock bottom, the ground under them gives way, and they plunge even deeper. The Red Devils have lost 9 games already this season; they have been knocked out of the Carabao Cup, which they won last season, they are currently 8th in the Prem, and now they are on the verge of exiting the Champions League.
Manchester United’s most recent defeat came in Denmark last night, with FC Copenhagen beating them 4-3. However, the defeat came as a result of a rather unfortunate red card shown to Marcus Rashford. Even their arch-rival, Jamie Carragher, knows the Red Card was quite harsh.
Jamie Carragher defends Marcus Rashford
Former Liverpool captain Jamie Carragher came to the defence of Marcus Rashford following his sending-off in Manchester United’s 4-3 defeat against FC Copenhagen.
Shortly after the contentious red card incident, Carragher expressed his opinion on Twitter, stating: “No way is that a red card for Rashford! Hate these slow-motion replays & still images that make everything look 10 times worse.”
Manchester United faced their ninth loss of the season in their fourth Champions League group game against Copenhagen on Wednesday night in Denmark. The Red Devils paid a steep price for the red card shown to Marcus Rashford in the first half.
The English international striker received his marching orders after what appeared to be a stamp on the ankle of Copenhagen defender Elias Jelert while attempting to shield the ball.
The referee took his time to consult the VAR monitor before sending off the Manchester United star, but the decision left Jamie Carragher extremely upset. The pundit firmly believed that the referee had made an incorrect call.
Marcus Rashford’s underwhelming performance continues
Rashford has been a starter in all of Manchester United’s first 10 Premier League matches of the season. In these games, he managed to score one goal and provide one assist. In the recent Manchester derby defeat, he played for 86 minutes and had the lowest pass-completion rate among all starting players.
Rashford scored 30 goals last season, but he currently isn’t having it easy locating the back of the net in recent games. However, Marcus Rashford is not one united attacker suffering from a goal drought. As a matter of fact, Rashford is the only Manchester United attacker to have scored in the Premier League this season.
Despite his challenging start to the season, Manchester United manager Erik Ten Hag has publicly expressed his support for Marcus Rashford.
“[We have to] give him the trust, I play him every game,” the Dutchman said at a press conference.
“Most of the games also he finishes. I have a strong belief he will return to scoring a lot of goals.”
“It also has to do with the co-operation, with the movement around [him], with the distribution to him. And so we have to work on that. That is my focus point.”
