It’s been a tough season for Manchester United and everyone associated with the club. Fans started the season with big expectations, and who can blame them? The club had just finished third the previous season, above Liverpool, while Erik Ten Hag also managed to deliver the Carabao Cup title in his first season at the club, so challenging for the league this season was not ruled out.
However, with less than three months left to play, United are languishing in sixth place, with the FA Cup the only trophy they’re playing for, and boy did they play with their lives yesterday against Liverpool. Their win over the Merseyside team didn’t go well with a certain club legend, who snapped at Manchester United’s chances of winning the title.
Jamie Carragher takes sly dig at Rio Ferdinand
Manchester United played the game of their lives yesterday and came out on top despite being entirely written off before the game. Liverpool had gone 28 games without losing in all competitions, so nobody expected United to have a chance in the game. The resilient United pulled off an incredible win in extra time to end Jurgen Klopp’s quadruple hopes, with Jamie Carragher hitting back at Ferdinand for celebrating the win.
Rio Ferdinand reposted a collaged picture of United beating Liverpool over the years, one of which had a sad sight of Jamie Carragher in it with the caption “Wembley,” indicating how United’s triumph opened the door for them to play the semi-final clash at Wembley, something that didn’t go down well with the Liverpool legend. “Relax, Manchester City will beat you comfortably in the final and ETH (Erik Ten Hag) will still be in charge next season. It’s not the win you think it is,” the former Liverpool defender responded to the post.
For context, Manchester United were handed an easy draw in the semi-final, with the Reds set to face Championship side Coventry City. On the other hand, Chelsea and Manchester will battle it out after beating Leicester City and Newcastle United, respectively. Despite the hard draw, Jamie Carragher expects Manchester City to beat Chelsea in the semi-final before hammering United to lift back-to-back FA Cup trophies after beating the same opponents last season.
This was another controversial moment for Jamie Carragher, who, earlier this week, had caused quite a stir by putting Kate Abdo on the spot by questioning her loyalty to her new partner Malik Scott.
Manchester United defeat Liverpool to reach FA Cup semi-final
The Manchester United vs Liverpool game is always exciting, and one would rank yesterday’s clash as perhaps their most exciting and memorable clash in a very long time. Both teams needed an extra 30 minutes for the game to be decided, with United making the most of Liverpool’s tired legs and injury situation to pull off an incredible win, thanks to Amad Diallo’s late goal in the 121st minute.
United took the lead with a goal from Scott McTominay in the 10th minute. The Scotland international found the back of the net after the Liverpool goalkeeper deflected a shot. Unfortunately for them, this goal only served to boost Liverpool’s momentum as they ended the first half in the lead against United. They managed to score two rapid goals in the closing minutes of the first half, courtesy of Alexis Mac Allister and Mo Salah, who have a knack for finding the back of the net in this match-up.
Even though Liverpool had control in the second half, it seemed like Jurgen Klopp was determined to keep their quadruple hopes alive. However, Manchester United’s record signing, Antony, surprised everyone by scoring a late winner with his right foot, which he doesn’t typically rely on. After the game was forced into extra time, Liverpool must have been pretty confident when Harvey Elliot’s deflected shot managed to beat Onana on the far post. They probably thought they had secured the winning goal.
Marcus Rashford scored a clean one to make it 3-3 after being played on by McTominay. The best part of the night was reserved for the last minute. Liverpool were attacking from a corner when Amad Diallo won the ball and played Garnacho through for a 2-in-1 situation. Diallo, who reports have linked with a move away from Manchester United, also kept running as United led a bolt-lightning counter attack. Garnacho slipped the ball back to the Ivorian, who managed a shot past Liverpool’s goalkeeper to hand United the unexpected victory.
