Luis Enrique made a name for himself at Barcelona when he clinched the treble in 2015. The Spaniard won a historic second treble at the club for the first time since Pep Guardiola did it in 2009, and it was an exciting time for everyone associated with the club. Although he had the likes of Messi, Neymar, and Suarez at their absolute peak, it was his mastermind that brought success to the Camp Nou at the time.
He has since taken up a job at PSG, where he’s currently leading the French club to potentially another league title. He has also managed to guide the club to the quarterfinals of this season’s UEFA Champions League, where he’s set to face his former club, Barcelona, amidst an uncertain future about where he’ll most likely end up after the expiration of his contract in France.
Luis Enrique is not likely to return to Barcelona
Luis Enrique is enjoying his first season as PSG manager, even though he’s most likely to lose his star player, Kylian Mbappe, to Real Madrid at the end of this current season. He has guided PSG to the top of the Ligue 1 table with a 12-point advantage over the second-placed team, which means the French giants are most likely to secure the French league once more. A strong Champions League campaign will also ensure the spirits are high in the PSG camp ahead of an important summer.
Sadly, there are so many uncertainties around the club. With Kylian Mbappe leaving for Real Madrid this summer, they’ve yet to identify the perfect replacement for the Frenchman, and although Enrique has claimed that his squad would be better without Mbappe, it’s quite hard how they intend to do that. Mbappe’s future is not the only thing in the air; the manager’s fate is, too.
His contract will expire at the end of next season as he only signed a two-year contract, and the Spaniard recently spoke on his future plans and whether or not he would be returning to Barcelona someday.
“Return to Barcelona? I’d always like that one day, Barcelona means a lot to me,” the treble-winning manager said. “It looks unlikely, though. I want to respect my contract at PSG as we have an important project to develop and I won’t break my contract, no way,” he added.
Luis Enrique on Kylian Mbappe to Real Madrid “only he knows”
Unlike Luis Enrique, who doesn’t comprehend what the future holds for him, Kylian Mbappe already knows where he’ll be playing next season, and it’s not PSG. The Frenchman informed PSG of his decision not to stay at the club beyond this season, which means his mind is set on a move to Real Madrid, which have reportedly sealed his deal for next season and many more seasons beyond.
“Mbappe to Real Madrid? I don’t know, no one knows,” Luis Enrique said when asked about the future of the Frenchman. “Only Kylian knows, and when all parties involved decide to share the truth and their decision, we will be there to listen,” he concluded.
Luis Enrique is already planning for life without his star man, although he continues to claim he has no idea what is going on with Mbappe. In preparation for his departure, Luis Enrique has been taking him off important games, even when they were chasing goals. His reason was that the club needed to get used to playing without him since this is going to end up happening anyway.
