Luis Suarez returns to Uruguay squad for their World Cup qualifying match against Lionel Messi’s Argentina

Luis Suarez has always been vocal about his relationship with Lionel Messi. They’re both South Americans and their professional relationship in Barcelona did wonders for their friendship, which has grown stronger with time. With Messi now playing in the MLS, it’s not a secret that he wants one of his best friends there with him.

With reports now claiming Suarez is close to joining Inter Miami, the Uruguayan will put friendship aside when his side meets with Argentina in South America’s World Cup qualifier on Thursday as Argentina look to strengthen their lead at the top of the table.

Luis Suarez returns to Uruguay squad

Luis Suarez has not turned out for Uruguay since his country’s exploits at the last World Cup. However, a run of form in front of goal this season for Gremio has convinced new coach Marcelo Bielsa to recall the former Barcelona man to the Uruguay squad to face Argentina in their next World Cup qualifying game on Thursday.

Luis Suarez has scored 16 goals in 29 games for Gremio this season, including a 14-minute hat-trick four days ago for the Brazilian outfit. His form has not gone unnoticed by Bielsa as the former Leeds United manager quickly gave Suarez his first international call-up since the World Cup.

Suarez remains Uruguay’s record goalscorer, with 68 international goals to his name. His experience will definitely come in handy as Uruguay faces group leader Argentina, who has yet to concede a goal in the qualifying rounds so far.

If chosen to participate in the match, Luis Suarez will be going up against his best friend, Lionel Messi, whom he’ll be joining at Inter Miami very soon if recent reports are to be believed.

Uruguay, who is second-placed in the group, will hope to cause an upset and close the gap on Argentina after defeating Brazil in their last qualifying match.

Uruguay’s Fede Valverde explains how to stop Lionel Messi

Lionel Messi is every defender’s nightmare. He’s perhaps the most unstoppable man in the history of the sport, and Uruguay’s Fede Valverde, who has also played against the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner at club level, has expressed his candid opinion on how his side plans to stop the World Cup winner.

“I don’t know how to do it. I could never stop him,” Fede Valverde said when asked about stopping Lionel Messi. “We had many Clasicos, and Casemiro was always a good weapon against Messi, although not always. You have to respect him because he’s one of the best players in the world,” the Real Madrid midfielder added.
