Luka Doncic’s record-breaking campaign leaves one NBA legend furious: “I’m so mad. He’s breaking every one of my records”

Luka Doncic has been on fire this season for the Dallas Mavericks. The former Real Madrid guard has pulled the Mavs to the playoffs and his numbers while doing so are mind-boggling.

With those massive figures, Doncic has broken records left, right and center this season. Many have lauded the Slovenian for the explosive season he is having, but a former legend close to the franchise has coined his praise quite uniquely. The legend in question is one of Mavs’ favorite sons, Dirk Nowitzki.

Dirk Nowitzki shares candid thoughts on Luka Doncic’s performances

Dirk Nowitzki revealed that he is mad at Luka Doncic while speaking to Kevin Hart during ESPN’s broadcast of the clash between the Dallas Mavericks and Miami Heat.

The Mavs legend jokingly stated, “Man, I’m so mad. He’s breaking every one of my records, man!” Showering the Slovenian guard with compliments for his current form, Nowitzki added, “I am thrilled for him obviously. My last year was his first year in the league and it was just great to see and get to know him a little bit. We saw in Year 1 that the sky is the limit for him but I honestly didn’t think he could go there.”

Dirk, who once had doubts about Luka, believes that his offensive skills are flawless, and with every passing year, he continues to amaze Nowitzki by playing better. Doncic recently broke the legendary figure’s franchise record of scoring 35 or more points in a game while appearing in 1,169 fewer games.

Along with his shooting skills, 48.7% from the field, and 38.2% from the 3-point range, Luka’s passes are the center of attraction. The Mavs’ ace has spread his magic on the hoop enthusiasts with his brilliant passes and massive numbers this season, which earned him heaps of praise from former NBA players as well as his peers.

Luka Doncic 2023-24 NBA season in numbers

Luka Doncic has been setting new records with his phenomenal performances in every game, along with his Mavericks teammate Kyrie Irving. Despite the franchise suffering in games pre-All-Star break, post the break Doncic seems to have unleashed his beast to pull the team to the fifth position in the Western Conference table.

Appearing in 70 games for the franchise, the guard scored 33.9 points per game while grabbing an average of 9.2 rebounds and distributing 9.8 assists, his 1.4 steals per game is also commendable making him a worthy 2024 MVP contender.

Though the Slovenian failed to record multiple triple-doubles by a hair, he managed to add 21 of them to his name this season, earning him the third spot, as per Statmuse. He also recorded his career-high 73 points on Jan. 26 against the Atlanta Hawks.

While Luka is in their starting team, the confident Mavericks snatched nine wins in their last 10 games. However, without their trump card, the Dallas franchise has a 4-6 record this season. With their star performer at his best, the Mavericks are marching toward the playoff tournament to display their supremacy.
