The January transfer window has opened and clubs have already started to bring in players. Many clubs, including Manchester United, are bringing in reinforcements in order to strengthen their team for the second half of the season. With such a crucial time looming, Manchester United are already thinking hard about which specific players to bring in.
With the INEOS takeover already approved, United will have some emergency funds available to spend on players who will help them in the second part of the season. And now, two players have been targeted.
Manchester United reportedly target Choupo-Moting
Manchester United are surprisingly going for a shock transfer for Bayern Munich striker Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting. He already has Premier League experience from his time at Stoke City in 2017–18 and has also played for Paris Saint-Germain previously.
He plays for Bayern Munich currently, having a somewhat good output last season. This season, he has largely been on the bench, with new transfer Harry Kane absolutely tearing up the Bundesliga.
The player now wants to leave for more minutes and is said to favor a move to Manchester United. Bayern are also keen to let him leave, and United see him as a quick and efficient solution to their lack of goals up front.
With players like Rasmus Hojlund being inexperienced and inefficient in the attack for United, a cheap alternative in the form of Choupo-Moting could be a very smart transfer. The Red Devils cannot spend too much since they are struggling with Financial Fair Play rules, so they have to spend cheaply and the Bayern striker could be their only option. Either a loan deal or a low transfer fee could be enough to lure him to Old Trafford.
Barcelona defender on United radar
While they are suffering with scoring goals, they also need a fresh center back to combat their defensive woes as well. With injuries and the underperformance of players affecting them, a new defender would be a boost to manager Erik ten Hag.
And Barcelona center back Andreas Christensen is the man they want, with the Dane already having played for Chelsea before, where he spent a decade. While he has been successful at Barcelona, the Catalans need some cash as they also struggle with FFP rules, and the sale of Christensen is highly possible, despite his desire to stay.
United therefore see an opportunity to get ahold of a great ball-playing center back with good experience. But they will face competition from Newcastle United, who also want the player amid their own struggles on the pitch. With Barcelona desperate to sell, a cheap price could be gotten for him, and it would be smart for United to get their hands on him.
Manchester United have a full month to decide which players to bring in, though they will now focus on their FA Cup 3rd round match against Wigan Athletic tonight.
