Manon Fiorot made easy work of Erin Blanchfield in a potential number-one contender fight in the main event of UFC Atlantic City. Both fighters had only lost once in their professional MMA career when they stepped inside the octagon.
Nonetheless, Blanchfield could not get past the rangy jabs of Fiorot and lost via unanimous decision. After the victory, Fiorot called for a shot at the UFC’s women’s flyweight title. Speaking to MMA Junkie‘s Farah Hannoun, Fiorot has now made his thoughts known as the date for Valentina Shevchenko versus Alexa Grasso III is not yet announced.
“The best choice for me is to be a backup on the fight (Shevchenko vs Grasso III). I think it’s a good thing if someone like Valentina (Shevchenko) or Alexa (Grasso) has an injury or if she misses weight and stuff like that,” said Manon Fiorot via translator.
“So I think the best choice for me now is to be a backup for this fight so I can see the fight and perhaps do a face-off after against the winner. And if it’s not, I can fight, but for sure, I want an interim title or something like that. I think I deserve it,” Fiorot added.
With contenders like Maycee Barber, Rose Namajunas, and Erin Blanchfield, the women’s flyweight division has become the best female division in the UFC. Moreover, the potential arrival of strawweight Zhang Weili and Tatiana Suarez, who recently signed with Dominance MMA, could further enhance the state of the division.
State of the UFC’s women’s flyweight division
The UFC’s women’s flyweight division was under the rule of Valentina Shevchenko before she was upset by Alex Grasso at UFC 285. In the subsequent rematch at Noche UFC, an erroneous judge’s scorecard resulted in a split draw, thus setting the stage for a trilogy fight.
Grasso and Shevchenko are the coaches at the Ultimate Fighter Season 32, with a potential trilogy fight set for UFC 306 at the Las Vegas Sphere. Manon Fiorot would certainly get the victor due to her undefeated streak in the promotion, with notable victories against Erin Blanchfield, Rose Namajunas, Katlyn Chookagian, and Jennifer Maia.
Aside from Manon Fiorot, Maycee Barber has a 6-fight winning streak in the division, one behind the French woman. However, she is presumed to fight Namajunas, who lost her flyweight debut to Fiorot but bounced back with a victory over Amanda Ribas. Jessica Andrade is also in the mix, but her immediate plans are at the strawweight division.
