Despite having a prolific and well-paid quarterback like Dak Prescott at the helm, the Dallas Cowboys are falling short of expectations lately. After securing a 23-point victory in Week 8, the Cowboys went down to their divisional rival Philadelphia Eagles 28-23 in Week 9, giving a chance to the franchise’s intense critic Stephen A. Smith to throw another jab at their fanbase.
The Dallas-based team’s run game is doing a very poor job in the last few weeks, and with the recent performance, they are yet to secure a playoff run this season. Ahead of the team’s next campaign against the New York Giants, they decided to bolster the offensive side by signing wide receiver Martavis Bryant.
Cowboys secure Martavis Bryant
Though the Cowboys’ receiver room is not short of stars in the presence of Ceedee Lamb, Michael Gallup, and Brandin Cooks, they added Martavis Bryant to their practice squad on Wednesday, via NBC Sports. Shams Charania of The Athletic first reported the team’s potential move of adding him on the roster on Tuesday.
After getting drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers as a fourth-round draft pick in 2014, the WR spent four years with the team. Soon after the draft, he became an important member in the squad and recorded 50 receptions for 765 yards along with six touchdowns in 11 games in 2015.
After getting suspended for the entire 2016 season, the veteran once again proved his caliber by recording 603 receiving yards along with six receiving touchdowns. Following 2018, he spent time in the CFL and the XFL.
Martavis Bryant breaks 5-year silence with NFL return
As aforementioned, Bryant stepped into the NFL world like a protagonist and showcased all the potential to become one of the most reliable weapons on the offensive side. However, following less than four seasons, he was hit hard by the NFL for breaking some rules, and his professional football career was left in jeopardy.
The receiver has not played in the league since November 11, 2018, and his signing with the Cowboys marks his return to the league after five years. Nevertheless, the vet is not worried about his past, instead, he is more focused on proving his critics wrong by shining brightly on the field.
“The sky’s the limit for me. I know I’m 31 but I’m still fast, still big, I still want to play football. I haven’t lost anything. It’s more of a prove it point to me. I got a lot of doubters out there. It’s more of me proving to myself that I still got it.”
After missing the 2016 season due to suspension, the ex-Steelers star once again sustained the misfortune when the NFL alleged him of violating the terms of his conditional reinstatement from 2017. The league accused him of multiple violations of the substance abuse policy, leading him to get suspended indefinitely in December 2018.
The NFL decided to let Bryant resume his journey in the league last week. The Cowboys were the first team to showcase interest in him and hence, the move came.
