Mason Greenwood has been in a strange situation with Manchester United since his return from football. The Manchester United forward was involved in a sexual assault and domestic abuse case with his girlfriend, Harriet Robson, who involved the police in the situation, causing him to be arrested in January 2022 in what threatened to ruin his career.
Although all charges were dropped against him in February 2023, fans protested against his return to Manchester United’s first team, which prompted a season-long loan move to Getafe, where he’s been thriving all season. With Barcelona interested in signing him, the former academy player is said to have his allegiance somewhere else.
Mason Greenwood to potentially snub Barcelona depending on United stance
Mason Greenwood’s return to football has been met with much jubilation from fans, who are more than excited to see him back in action again after two years of inactivity due to his legal issues. After being snapped up by Getafe on loan at the start of the season following his return to football, Greenwood has since been found playing with a smile on his face while he works hard to get back to his absolute best.
The Manchester United loanee has 12 goals and assists in 24 appearances for Getafe this season across La Liga and the Copa del Rey. His form has caught the attention of several European clubs, with Barcelona particularly interested in signing him as the next big thing to form a young attack with the likes of Lamine Yamal and Ansu Fati next season, despite the departure of Xavi at the end of the season due to not being valued enough.
However, Greenwood reportedly favors a return to Manchester United, depending on the club’s decision on his future. Sir Jim Ratcliffe, United’s new co-owner, mentioned in a recent interview that the club would assess the player at the end of the season and make a decision on him.
Greenwood’s potential international allegiance change
Greenwood has represented England at all stages up until his debut, which came in 2020. Gareth Southgate handed the youngster his first international senior appearance in September in a Nations League fixture against Iceland, and although he received future call-ups to the team, disciplinary issues with Phil Foden during the coronavirus pandemic saw him miss out on the squad.
Since his return to football this season, the debate has been up in the air regarding his international future. Will England fans be forgiving enough to see him represent the Three Lions again? Will Gareth Southgate show him some mercy? That may not be necessary, as the youngster may be considering a change of allegiance.
According to Sport Bible, Mason Greenwood could choose to represent Jamaica, as he’s of the country’s descent. With only one cap for England, which came over three years ago, Mason Greenwood could easily switch allegiance to represent Jamaica.
