Matthijs de Ligt injury: Bayern star CB suffers capsule damage on his knee expected to be sidelined for two weeks

Matthijs de Ligt was a huge part of Erik Ten Hag’s Ajax side that made it to the semi-final of the 2019 UEFA Champions League. De Ligt was just an important part of the squad; he was the captain of the side that beat the likes of Juventus and Real Madrid to make it into the last four of the UEFA Champions League.

The Dutchman has since moved to Bayern Munich via Juventus and has established himself as one of their best defenders. However, Tuchel’s men may have to cope without their young defender for a while, as he suffered an injury that could keep him on the sidelines for up to two weeks.

Bayern Munich suffered a surprising 2-1 defeat at the hands of Saarbrucken in the DFB Pokal on Wednesday. Sadly, that’s not the only loss the Bavarians suffered. They also lost their young defender to an apparent serious injury, as described by Thomas Tuchel.

The former Ajax man came off with a twist in his joint in the 25th minute, with Thomas Tuchel looking very worried. “It is the same knee again, the same cartilage. It’s very painful. As of yet, we have no diagnosis,” the former Chelsea Champions League-winning manager said in his post-match interview after the shocking loss.

Thomas Muller, who could leave Bayern Munich at the end of his contract, scored Bayern’s only goal of the match.

While the full extent of the injury has not been revealed yet, Fabrizio Romano reported that De Ligt could be out for around six weeks.

Bayern Munich are dealing with injury problems for senior players like Dayot Upamecano, Noussair Mazraoui, Serge Gnabry, Leon Gortezka, and Raphael Guerriero.

Thomas Tuchel will now prepare his team to put Wednesday’s disappointment behind them and give the fans their money’s worth when they travel to Signal Iduna Park to take on Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga. Bayern trail Leverkusen in the Bundesliga by two points, and a win over Dortmund over the weekend could put them top of the league.

Matthijs de Ligt injury

Matthijs de Ligt has had 15 injuries since the start of his career, missing just five games during his two-year stint at Ajax. However, the young Dutch defender suffered the most serious injuries of his career while playing for Juventus in the Serie A. De Ligt missed a total of 37 games for the Bianconerri.

The Bayern defender missed over three months of action when he suffered a shoulder injury in August 2020. Since signing with Bayern Munich in the summer of 2022, Matthijs De Ligt has missed nine games prior to the injury he suffered yesterday to the capsule in his knee.

Bayern Munich lost young midfielder Ryan Gravenberch to Liverpool before the close of the last transfer window, and the Dutchman could be key to Jurgen Klopp signing another Bayern Munich youngster next summer.
