After winning 10 races already this season, the reigning world champion upped that number to 11 this weekend at the 2023 Dutch GP, to make it a record-equalling 9 consecutive wins in front of his home crowd at Zandvoort!
The race was a hard-fought one, with the early laps almost making it seem like Max Verstappen’s season-long dominance was about to be interrupted by a new winner. Speaking on the events of the race, the Dutchman sheds light on what made this win that much more special.
Max Verstappen discusses Zandvoort victory
After winning an exciting, drama-filled Dutch GP, the Dutchman opened up to the media about what winning meant to him. However, to the Dutchman, the biggest thing this weekend was not winning a drama-filled race nor equalizing Sebastian Vettel’s record, rather winning at home was his biggest takeaway.
Speaking on this, he said, “Very happy with that [tying Vettel’s record], but I’m in general very happy to win here in front of my home crowd.”
The next day, on social media, he wrote, “I feel extremely proud to win my home race again, in front of all of you, this makes this day and the victory even more special. Thank you so much to everyone for coming to the track and sticking around through the bad weather to celebrate this win with us.”
Notably, there is no mention of equalizing a Formula 1 record!
Verstappen equals Sebastian Vettel’s record
After his victory at the 2023 Dutch Grand Prix, Max Verstappen has once again re-cemented his place in Formula 1 history as a record holder for the most consecutive race wins, alongside former Red Bull driver and 4-time world champion Sebastian Vettel, with 9 race wins in a row!
Speaking on this achievement, the Dutchman states, “It was probably one of the more difficult races to win, but yeah, nine in a row is something I never even thought about.”
He went on to speak about how having the fastest car does not guarantee a race win, “Even if you have the best car, and I think there have been more dominant cars in the past than what we have at the moment, and they haven’t been able to do so, to win nine in a row, whatever, the consecutive wins we have as a team.”
“So it is hard, and especially like today, it’s easy to make a wrong call or even drop it yourself in the gravel or whatever. It’s never that straightforward, unfortunately,” he added.
