Megan Rapinoe is one of American women’s football’s most outspoken soccer players. The high-profile captain of the USWNT is known for her fierce nation, which has disrupted the dressing room and on the pitch since they last won the World Cup in 2019 under Donald Trump’s administration.
The now-retired USWNT captain and Donald Trump have not always seen eye-to-eye, with both openly criticizing each other every chance they get. Donald Trump did not hold back in his assessment of Megan Rapinoe following the exit of the USWNT at the recently concluded Women’s World Cup in Australia, something the latter has now played down.
Megan Rapinoe claps back to Donald Trump’s criticism claiming it was “fake”
There is no love lost between Donald Trump and Megan Rapinoe after the USWNT became a vocal opponent of the former American president, criticizing many of his policies when he was in office. She even went as far as rejecting an invitation to the White House to celebrate the USWNT’s victory at the 2019 Women’s World Cup in France. “No, I’m not going to the White House,” she said in an interview after their World Cup victory.
Unfortunately, the USWNT didn’t have the same luck that brought them the World Cup trophy four years ago at the last World Cup in Australia and New Zealand after they crashed out in the round of 16 to an underdog Sweden. Megan Rapinoe missed the USWNT’s decisive penalty, blasting her spot-kick way over the post, earning herself another spot in Donald Trump’s blacklist, with the former US president taking to social media to blame her for the loss.
“The shocking and unexpected loss by the U.S. Women’s Soccer Team to Sweden is fully emblematic of what is happening to our once great Nation under crooked Joe Biden,” he wrote in a post. “I’m a big fan of the U.S. team and women’s soccer, but Megan should first win before she speaks. Finish the job,” he concluded.
Rapinoe has now responded in an interview by the Atlantic on Tuesday, labelling Trump’s criticism ‘fake.’ “It always is (hard to parse) because what he’s saying is fake. It’s a complication of hit words and hot-button words that don’t actually make any sort of sense or square with reality at all,” Rapinoe said.

Despite her controversial nature, Megan Rapinoe is one of the best soccer players in the United States, with the American women’s team captain winning several global accolades, including the Ballon d’Or. She has also led the United States to three CONCACAF trophies, making her one of the most successful players in the country.
The USWNT captain announced in July that she’d be retiring at the end of this current season, with high hopes for her to deliver the World Cup for the country one last time. However, the team crashed out in the round of 16 of the tournament, losing to Sweden and ending Rapinoe’s hopes of lifting the World Cup once again as a player.
