Due to the immense pressure built up by the lack of performances throughout the entire season, Sergio Perez is seen struggling with significant emotional and physical challenges. Although the Mexican driver started the 2023 session by clinching two consecutive victories, he soon fell into a loop of failures compared to the Dutch sensation, Max Verstappen.
Checo has been a remarkable driver in the past few years. Nonetheless, this season, he has been having difficulty keeping pace with his teammate’s performance. Things couldn’t get any worse, as he recently got involved in a huge clash with Charles Leclerc in front of his own people at the Mexican GP.
Sergio Perez crashes with Charles Leclerc
Sergio Perez wanted to pursue an assertive strategy to dominate the main race, starting from the fifth position on the grid. As he proceeded to the first corner of his initial lap, the Mexican driver was sent flying off the circuit by the Ferrari’s front wheel.
Even though he managed to return to the pit lane, the extent of the damage was severe enough that Red Bull had to immediately withdraw his car from the race, making a dramatic exit from the event. Sergio insisted that if he had not given it all by trying to take the lead in the race, he might have been disappointed a lot more than in his current situation.
He also claimed of how “proud” he was for his performance this weekend, even though he was simultaneously “sad” about how it ultimately ended, by saying “I would be disappointed to be on the podium today knowing I had a chance to go for the lead and I didn’t take it.”
“On the other side, I am extremely proud of myself because I gave it all. I’m very proud of my team. We gave it all for the whole weekend and probably the best start of the year, so we just went for it.”
After the race, Charles Leclerc was audibly booed by the Mexican fans, but he defended himself by saying he had “nowhere to go.”
Leclerc said: “A lot of booing, a lot of booing.”
“Guys, honestly, I had nowhere to go. I was in between the two Red Bulls and unfortunately, I touched Checo, but I had nowhere to go.”
Max Verstappen wins Mexico GP
Max Verstappen secured his victory at the Mexican GP once again, despite the half-hour delay of the race due to Kevin Magnussen’s crash and the threats faced by the 26-year-old. The incredible driver has secured 16 victories out of 18 races this season, breaking his record of having the most victories in a single season.
The three-time World Champion also secured the 51st victory of his career, putting himself at the same level as the sensational, retired F1 former driver, Alain Prost.
At a post-race interview, he said: “It’s been incredible.
“We’re experiencing an incredible season and again today as well. We had to start P3, but the pace of the car was very, very good.”
