After commencing his NFL journey in 2010, ex-NFL standout Mike Williams opted to bid farewell to the football realm after spending nearly six seasons in the league. Nevertheless, what NFL fans didn’t anticipate after his departure from the field was the permanent loss of his presence off the field.
Initially rumored to be “alive,” Williams met an untimely demise at a young age. As questions lingered about the circumstances surrounding his sudden and unexpected death, a recent report unveiled a peculiar cause behind this abrupt tragedy.
Mike Williams was hospitalized after a freak accident
In September, the NFL community mourned the loss of former player Mike Williams, whose life took a tragic turn following a construction site accident. The incident occurred when heavy supplies landed on Williams’ head, causing head trauma that led to a series of critical health complications.
After being rushed to the hospital the next day, Williams was admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) with acute hypoxic respiratory failure, cardiac arrest, and sepsis, all stemming from multiple brain abscesses.
The 36-year-old athlete suffered a cardiac arrest on September 1, and despite resuscitative efforts, he was eventually intubated and sedated. Williams was later transferred to hospice on September 7, where he passed away five days later.
The former Tampa Bay Buccaneer, who had played a significant role in the NFL, faced the aftermath of the construction site accident, leaving him partially paralyzed and dependent on a ventilator. Williams’ untimely death on September 12 marked the end of a journey that had once seen him as a fourth-round draft pick out of Syracuse in 2010.
Throughout his NFL career, Mike Williams showcased his talents with the Buccaneers from 2010 to 2013, briefly joining the Buffalo Bills in 2014, and concluding his playing days with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2016. His impressive stats include 223 catches for 3,089 yards and 26 touchdowns, leaving a lasting impact on the teams he represented.

The medical examiner’s office released an initial case summary report, stating, “bacterial sepsis with cerebral abscesses and necrotizing lobar pneumonia due to multiple dental caries and retained dental roots” as the primary factors leading to Williams’ passing.
The report also listed arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease as a contributing factor in his death. This rare but serious condition is linked to dental issues.
The shocking revelation prompts reflection on the potential impact of neglecting dental care, even for professional athletes like Williams.
Williams’ next of kin provided additional information, revealing that he regularly used Kratom, a legal herbal supplement known for its stimulant and opioid-like effects.
The family raised concerns about the possibility of unprescribed drugs being introduced by visitors during his hospitalization. Despite these concerns, there was no indication of foul play, and Williams’ death was deemed to be of natural causes.
The full autopsy and toxicology results are still pending, but the preliminary records indicate a history of marijuana use, social alcohol use, and daily consumption of Kratom. The combination of factors paints a complex picture of Williams’ health and lifestyle.
As the football community and fans grapple with this revelation, the full autopsy results will likely provide additional insights into the circumstances surrounding the beloved athlete’s death.
Stay tuned for the next update.
