He said: “By far Puerto Rico, Backlash. The crowd was crazy, and I had been there the night before which I was kind of like, ‘They have seen me. I wonder if they will be excited plus we’re the main event. We’ll see.’ They were amazing and it was fun to be in Puerto Rico because of the history of wrestling and sports entertainment in Puerto Rico. But the only thing I thought when he hit the buckle and turned around, he was covered in blood.

“The only thing that came to my mind, was that this sounds so silly. A wrestler or a fan will understand this, the only thing that came to my mind was, ‘This is Puerto Rico’. Because I’m thinking Abdullah the Butcher, I am thinking Carlos Colon. It’s just like, I was thinking at a different level about the hardcore.”

Backlash 2023 was one of the most hyped PLEs in a long-time, with every match exceeding the other. Nevertheless, the validation came both ways as Lesnar paid his dues to Rhodes.

Cody Rhodes and Brock Lesnar’s feud ended with a heartfelt gesture

Following the SummerSlam loss, Brock Lesnar did something that surprised many fans in the arena and watching at home. The Beast shook Rhodes’ hand, and Lesnar raised Rhodes’ arm up in the air. “As I saw him taking his gloves off, I sincerely thought he was going to start swinging,” Rhodes said. “Then we went head-to-head, and it felt like we were a millisecond away from starting up again. So I didn’t anticipate that handshake coming. … When I saw his hand gesture, I was grateful. That’s not something he does. Again, this run has consistently surprised me. The torch isn’t passed. You have to take it.”

Rhodes said he didn’t see Lesnar for the rest of the night. Brock Lesnar had said everything that needed to be said. With that monumental task out of the way, Rhodes is shifting his focus back toward what he came to WWE to capture the WWE Championship.
