Months after rejecting Al-Hilal’s $31 million offer, Jose Mourinho clears the air on Roma’s early-season struggles

Jose Mourinho may be one of the best managers of all time, but currently, the Portuguese is under fire for his bad start at Roma. The team has not been performing well this season, despite their previous success.

Mourinho had completely transformed Roma when he joined in 2021. He made the team gel very strongly, which led to them winning the Europa Conference League and later reaching the Europa League final. Despite the poor start, Mourinho claims not to be at fault.

Jose Mourinho denies blame amid Roma’s woes

Currently, the Italian team is 16th in the Serie A, after failing to win any of their three opening games. They only won one match against Empoli and have just 5 points. Just last Thursday, the team fell 4-1 to Genoa, earning much backlash for the manager. So far, this is the worst start to a season by Mourinho in his professional career.

However, Jose Mourinho claims he is not to be blamed in a fiery press interview. Speaking ahead of tonight’s clash against Frosinone, he said, “Because it’s not true. I’m not the problem.”

He also outlined that the club is partly to blame, as he previously reiterated that he is not being properly backed financially by them.

“Lots of little things are at play in a football club, a business, a political structure, an educational structure, and I know because I’ve worked in one. It’s always multiple factors.”

It’s not the first time Mourinho has given such a fiery interview and he has also left many clubs in a similar way criticizing the club.

Jose Mourinho snubs Al-Hilal’s historic bid

Mourinho also further revealed that he had snubbed a historic bid from Saudi club Al Hilal. Al Hilal had reportedly made an offer to him to manage their team, but Mourinho refused. If he had joined, he would inherit a great team boasting the likes of Neymar Jr., Aleksander Mitrovic, Kalidou Koulibaly and others.

He said that he had received a big offer in the summer, “During the holidays, I received the biggest and craziest offer a coach has ever received in the history of football.”

However, despite the crazy offer, he refused it as he felt he needed to be loyal to the players, fans and owner of the team. “And I turned it down. I did so because I’d given my word to my players, I’d given my word to the fans and I’d given my word to the club owner.”

The news was already widespread, thanks to renowned journalist Fabrizio Romano. He had revealed the club’s name, then unknown, and also revealed the offer to be worth $31 million. Jose Mourinho now has the tough task of leading his team from near the relegation zone, and will hope that his player can get the job done against Frosinone tonight.
