Months after WrestleMania 39 heartbreak, Dominik Mysterio shockingly reveals initial reluctance to face Rey Mysterio

Dominik Mysterio, who famously faced off against his own father, Rey Mysterio, at WrestleMania 39 this year in a Father vs. Son match, recently explained how the match between them almost didn’t happen.

Dominik Mysterio and Rey Mysterio, the popular father-son duo, were once Tag Team Champions. However, after Dom betrayed his father at Clash at the Castle 2022 and joined The Judgement Day, he has become a full-time heel and even faced off against Rey at WrestleMania this year.

Dominik Mysterio’s hesitation to wrestle his own father in WrestleMania

Dominik Mysterio was feuding with Rey Mysterio in the weeks leading up to their match at Mania, as he continued to torment his father and push him to agree to face him. The two then delivered a fantastic match, with the most memorable moment being when Rey pulled out a belt to spank Dominik, like a father teaching his son a lesson.

In an interview with Metro, ‘Dirty’ Dom revealed that there was a point in time when neither he nor his father wanted to have the match at WrestleMania 39. However, they eventually came around and agreed to it.

“I don’t think he wanted to do it, and I know there was a time that I didn’t wanna do it either. But then things change, Judgment Day happened and I kinda came to the realisation that if I wanted to live up to the Mysterio name, or pass the Mysterio name, or even hold onto the Mysterio name and take it and run with it,” said Dominik in the interview.

Who won at the main event of WrestleMania 39?

At WrestleMania 39, Hall of Famer Rey Mysterio faced off against his own son, Dominik Mysterio. The two have been feuding for a long time prior to their match, with Dom pushing Rey’s buttons every week, until he finally snapped and struck his son down when he insulted his mother and sister. Rey had the LWO on his side, whereas Dominik had the support of The Judgement Day.

In the end, Bad Bunny helped Rey win as he grabbed a chain that Dominik was going to use on his father. Rey then pinned him after hitting the 619, followed by a frog splash. Although Dominik hasn’t ruled out the possibility of a rematch in the future, it’s unlikely to happen considering he is in NXT and RAW, whereas Rey Mysterio is on SmackDown.

It should also be noted that WWE initially wanted Dom and Rey to face each other in 2021. However, this idea was disagreed to by the father and son. Stay tuned for further updates on WWE.
