Nate Diaz opens up on weight gain struggles ahead of his fight vs Jake Paul next week: “feeling lazy and tired”

Nate Diaz, a lightweight and welterweight competitor in mixed martial arts, is preparing for an intriguing challenge as he transitions to a professional boxer. In order to go head-to-head with Jake Paul in his boxing debut, Diaz had to significantly increase his weight to reach 185 pounds.

Despite experiencing various successes and setbacks during his UFC career, Diaz has made the decision to leverage his expertise in Brazilian jiu-jitsu and mixed martial arts within the realm of boxing. This shift from MMA to boxing presents a unique test for the skilled American athlete.

Nate Diaz fights Jake Paul at 185 pounds, up from 155 and 170 career weights

On August 5th, at the Dallas American Airlines Centre, the highly anticipated showdown between “The Problem Child,” and the seasoned MMA veteran will take place. Initially, there was uncertainty about the weight class for Jake’s bout against Diaz, but it has later been confirmed to be set at 185 pounds.

Throughout Diaz’s MMA career, he has competed in multiple weight classes. He started in the lightweight division at 155 pounds and later moved up to the welterweight division at 170 pounds in the UFC.

As for the number of rounds, Diaz and his team requested that the fight against Jake Paul be extended to ten rounds, even though it was originally planned for eight rounds. The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation granted approval for the ten-round battle, adding more excitement to the forthcoming clash between the two fighters.

Nate Diaz felt sluggish from weight gain before changing things

In a recent appearance on Bradley Martyn’s Raw Talk, Diaz discussed his transformation from weighing 170 pounds to 185 pounds and how this change has influenced his training and lifestyle significantly.

‘I’ve been eating a lot of food and getting heavier. I did feel [slower] at first when I was eating and trying to get big because I was on a weight gain diet, eating all kinds of stuff to get as big as I could.’ Nate said

Diaz acknowledged that his weight gain journey involved a substantial increase in energy levels, allowing him to engage in more activities. Initially, he adopted a strategy of consuming large quantities of food to bulk up as much as possible.

‘To a certain point, I was like ‘Dude, I’m lazy and tired and I’m working out like a meathead right now.’ I was lifting weights, bodybuilding, and all that stuff. It made me tired and lazy from carrying the extra weight, just made me drowsy.” Diaz added.

However, the Stockton native has now adopted a new approach, incorporating fasting into his routine. He fasts for half of the day, followed by controlled eating, allowing him to manage his weight more effectively.
