The Golden State Warriors core has been consistent for the last few years, with the trio of Klay Thompson, Stephen Curry, and Draymond Green bringing huge success to the team multiple times and it looks like the Dubs have no intention of changing it.
Klay has been with the Dubs since his debut in the league and has become a key member over the years for the team. Currently being in the final year of his five-year deal, Klay himself revealed that he wants to end his career as a one-team player while rumors of his new contract value circulate.
Speculation swirls over potential $35 million extension for Thompson
Klay Thompson is in the final year of his 5 year $190 million deal and it is very likely that he will sign a contract extension soon. The fore of the Dubs would be incomplete without Thompson as they have been a team that forms itself around the three-man core of Curry, Thompson, and Green.
The current contract value of KT is already one of the highest in the league and the extension is expected to pay him even more. It is speculated that the value of Thompson’s extension can be somewhere around $30-35 million per season. If the Dubs go with the standard 4-year deal as they did with Draymond Green this summer, the total extension value of Klay would be somewhere around $120-140 million which looks reasonable for a 4-year contract.
Klay Thompson’s determination to retire as a one-team legend
Klay Thompson has been with the Warriors ever since he stepped foot in the NBA. He has previously shown his desire to stay with the Dubs and recently confirmed it again while speaking to The Athletic. Killa Klay said, “Yes. Absolutely. I would not want to go anywhere else. To play for one franchise is so rare. In any sport. Football. Baseball. Basketball. Australian Rules Football. To play for one club is insane. It is some really legendary stuff. Even what Udonis Haslem did. He is revered in Miami. Locally. That is what I cherish.”
Klay further emphasized that he’s been with the team since the early days and it would be hard to envision himself in some other uniform. The Warriors have also shown their interest in keeping Klay with them and it is rumored that he may get an offer to sign an extension really soon.
