Newcastle were the most improved team in the Premier League last season, and Callum Wilson’s efforts helped them reach new heights. Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund acquired the Magpies, and everyone knew they were going to be a force to reckon with with that much financial backing, although not as quickly as they did.
Sadly, with Champions League football returning to St. James’ Park, Newcastle’s energy has waned, leading to inconsistent performances this season. Injuries have also not helped their cause, as Callum Wilson is now set for an extended period on the sidelines, leading to reports of a temporary fix from Barcelona.
Newcastle United target Barcelona star after Wilson’s injury
Despite the signing of Alexander Isak at the start of last season, Callum Wilson’s influence as one of the best players in that Newcastle team has never been in question. The Englishman picked up where he left off last season, scoring seven goals in 12 Premier League games this season, which makes him Newcastle’s top scorer in the competition.
His early-season form now looks threatened as injury looks to keep him out for a few weeks. This has sent Newcastle United into panic mode, as they’re now without a recognized striker, with injuries to Wilson and Isak looking to disrupt their plans for the season.
According to SportBible, the Magpies are now looking for a temporary fix in Barcelona’s Ferran Torres In the absence of their two top scorers. The Spaniard had a brief spell at Manchester City but failed to impress before moving back to Spain to join Barcelona last year.
Despite joining the Catalan club in a mega-money transfer, Torres has struggled for regular minutes, especially since the summer loan signing of Joao Felix, who has formed a good partnership with Robert Lewandowski and Lamine Yamal as an attacking trio.
Newcastle, who recorded a controversial win over Arsenal a fortnight ago, sit seventh in the Premier League with the most injuries in the competition this season.
Why is Callum Wilson not playing?
Eddie Howe will be scratching his head on how to deal with the recent injuries to his team, particularly Callum Wilson’s unfortunate injury against Borussia Dortmund earlier this month. The initial fear of a possible few weeks on the sidelines has now been realized, as Wilson may spend up to six weeks on the injury table.
The former Bournemouth striker is currently Newcastle’s top scorer in the Premier League, with seven goals in as many games this season. Newcastle will return to Premier League action after the international break as they host Chelsea at St. James’ Park.
This will be followed by another high-profile away game to PSG in the Champions League before a showdown with Manchester United at home in their first game in December.
Newcastle, who are already missing high-profile players like Sandro Tonali due to a long-term betting ban, will hope to make it through the next few weeks with quality points picked up in all competitions.
