Neymar is again making the rounds on social media for offering to help Dani Alves fight his legal battle in Spain after his former teammate spent almost a year in a Spanish jail.
Neymar Jr faces criticism over payment to Dani Alves’ lawyer
Neymar Jr has enjoyed an amazing relationship with Dani Alves since the two first played together for Barcelona at club level. As Brazilians who played in the same team, Alves quickly helped Neymar settle into the team and became his close friend.
The pair played together for the Brazilian national team for a long time, with Dani Alves even captaining the side a few times. All those years of friendship made Neymar unable to turn down a cry for help from his friend and former teammate in the midst of his legal battle.
Dani Alves has been battling a criminal case in Spain for over a year now. The former PSG player was taken into custody in January of 2023 and has remained in custody ever since over a rape case.
Recent reports are now suggesting that Neymar Jr has decided to help Dani Alves by offering to pay a huge €150,000 donation to help fight his legal battle. Alves’ trial begins next month, and Neymar has also provided his old friend with a lawyer in person of Gustavo Xisto, one of Neymar’s oldest lawyers.
Despite going through his own issues, no thanks to his long-term ACL injury, Neymar Jr has shown true character to help a friend, but his action has made him a target of criticism from the public for helping someone battling a rape battle.
What is happening with Dani Alves’ case now?
Dani Alves has spent a year in a Spanish jail as he awaits trial that’s scheduled to begin next month. The former Barcelona and PSG star was arrested in January 2023 for assaulting a 23-year-old woman in the bathroom of a nightclub in Sutton.
The victim, who has asked to be kept anonymous, has alleged that Alves raped her in the bathroom of the said nightclub and has requested compensation of €150,000 for the trauma the Brazilian athlete has caused her.
Dani Alves is not the only Brazilian to be in the news for a rape case. Neymar Jr. was also accused of rape in 2019, although his accuser was later found to be in an elaborate extortion plot to rip some money off the Brazilian superstar.
Several other Brazilian soccer players, like Robinho and Adriano, have been sent to jail for sexually assaulting women.
