NFL community in splits after Cowboys give Michael Gallup permission to seek trade: “Bro is basically irrelevant”

Let down by a season that fell short of Super Bowl glory, the Dallas Cowboys are hitting the refresh button after the NFL unveiled changes to the salary cap. Having freed up significant space with Zack Martin’s restructured deal, America’s Team is now exploring a Michael Gallup trade to create even more financial flexibility.

Rather than offering support during this challenging period, the NFL fans remained quick to give the receiver hard times themselves after the news broke out.

Cowboys expected to trade Michael Gallup

The Dallas Cowboys are letting wide receiver Michael Gallup look for a new team in a trade, according to several reports on Saturday night. While Gallup might be traded, most experts, including Dallas Cowboys journalist Calvin Watkins, believe the Cowboys will likely release him if a trade can’t be worked out.

The decision to allow Gallup to seek a trade comes in the wake of a notable decline in his production coupled with a substantial salary cap hit. His cap hit for the 2024 season stands at $13.8 million, making his departure from the Cowboys financially sensible.

Gallup’s journey with the Cowboys took a turn after he signed a lucrative five-year, $57.5 million deal before the 2022 season, per Bleacher Report. Nevertheless,  his on-field contributions have seen a downturn, making it increasingly challenging to justify the significant financial commitment made by the team.

Following two impressive seasons in 2019 and 2020, he faced adversity in the form of a torn ACL in the final game of the 2021 regular season. This setback has since manifested in a considerable drop in production, reflected in career-low statistics for Gallup in the 2023 season.

Fans react to Michael Gallup trade rumors

With Michael Gallup’s future in Dallas shrouded in uncertainty, a flicker of hope has ignited among Philadelphia Eagles fans. Rumors of a trade or release have coincided with a noticeable dip in Gallup’s performance, leaving Cowboys supporters unconcerned about his potential return.

Among them, one fan amusingly remarked on the diminishing impact the vet receiver has had on the Cowboys’ roster in the eyes of some fans.

“Almost forgot buddy was even still on the team,” one fan wrote.

Last season,  he recorded only 418 receiving yards, two touchdowns, and the second-fewest catches (34) of his career. Hence, another fan echoed the perception among fans that his contributions to the Cowboys have diminished in recent seasons.

“bro is basically irrelevant,” another comment read.

With the trade or release of Michael Gallup still in limbo, Eagles fans are monitoring the situation closely. As he is now dealing with potential trade options, fans await the official decisions leading up to the beginning of free agency on March 13.
