The Carolina Panthers concluded last season with a disappointing 2-15 record, despite having rookie standout Bryce Young. After gaining criticism from NFL veterans like Steve Smith Sr., who pointed fingers at the Panthers for Young’s struggles, the team wasted no time in fortifying their lineup through free agency.
The team recently added Nick Scott from the Cincinnati Bengals. Now they are making headlines by securing Jadeveon Clowney from the Baltimore Ravens, a move that brings him closer to his hometown.
Jadeveon Clowney agrees to multi-year Panthers deal
The Carolina Panthers have bolstered their roster by signing defensive end Jadeveon Clowney to a lucrative two-year contract. The deal is valued at $20 million initially but could potentially reach up to $24 million with incentives.
Clowney’s arrival comes as a timely addition for the Panthers, who are looking to fill the void left by several key departures from their defensive lineup. With the season ending in a dramatic loss, the Panthers are banking on the former Ravens player to help shore up their defense and contribute to their success on the field.
Interestingly, the Jets and Panthers have been competing for talent throughout the offseason. Just days before Clowney’s signing, the Jets successfully acquired wide receiver Mike Williams, who had initially planned to meet with the Panthers before deciding to join New York.
With both teams securing key acquisitions, it appears to be a win-win situation. The Jets bolstered their receiving corps with Williams, while the Panthers strengthened their pass rush with the addition of Clowney.
Clowney’s performance in the 2023 season was particularly impressive, marking a significant rebound from his struggles in 2022 with the Cleveland Browns. During his tenure with the Ravens, Clowney showcased his talent by playing in all 17 games and tallying 43 tackles and 9.5 sacks, per SI. Notably, he ranked fourth among edge rushers in pass rush win rate, tying with T.J. Watt.
The standout performance in 2023 ultimately earned the three-time Pro Bowler a multiyear contract in free agency.
Jadeveon Clowney’s Panthers deal hits closer to home
Jadeveon Clowney hails from South Carolina. Now the All-Pro pass rusher is set to make a meaningful return to his hometown of Rock Hill, which was a significant factor in his decision to join the Panthers.
For Clowney, the opportunity to play for the Carolina Panthers holds special significance, not only in terms of football but also for his family and community engagement.
“We’re going to be just 30 minutes from home. It’s where we do all our community and foundation work going into season 11. Plus, my Grandaddy is getting older; and last year we had a lot of losses in our family. So honestly, it just feels like a full circle moment being closer,” he said to Josina Anderson.
It will remain to be seen how the South Carolina native again embellishes his home country’s name in football history.
