The Dallas Cowboys are showcasing every potential to grab the Super Bowl title this year, and one of the main reasons behind that is their formidable defense. After starting the season with a 2-0 record in the first two weeks, the team faced a significant setback with the injury of their veteran weapon, Trevon Diggs, ahead of their next campaign.
While the entire Dallas squad is going nuts thinking about the uncertainty of Diggs on the roster, Bart Scott, an NFL analyst, made a very lame joke about the cornerback, making fans criticize him heavily on social media.
Fans torch Bart Scott for Trevon Diggs’ joke
On Friday’s ESPN’s “First Take,” Scott, along with Stephen A. Smith and Ryan Clark, was discussing Diggs’ injury. However, Scott took a wrong turn by linking the Cowboys star’s injury to his five-year, $97 million extension deal, implying that the team might face challenges due to the CB’s uncertainty this season.
“This is a major blow for Dallas, and like Stephen A. always says, just wait, something bad always happens,” he said.
Smith didn’t support his co-host in this controversial take and immediately shut him down from further joking about such a serious thing. Nevertheless, NFL fans couldn’t keep calm upon hearing the infamous joke and rallied in the comment section to throw jabs at him.
A fan wrote, “That’s like a 3/10 at worst on the bad joke scale. Relax.”
While some may brush off the topic by saying it was a joke, many fans claimed it was more like a subtle jab and slammed the analyst for his improper take regarding the serious issue.
A netizen wrote, “I don’t think He Meant that as a Joke. I mean; It didn’t sound like a Joke at all.”
Not just fans, Dallas linebacker Micah Parsons also took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to slam him, and urged ESPN not to present “corn balls” like him on TV.
“Wtf ?? He ole hating ass old head!! Lame asf!! This why I really don’t like talking to dudes in the media!! As a former player you are a lame asf bro! Just facts joking bout a man trying to feed his family and building a legacy! ESPN gotta stop letting corn balls on tv!!”
Besides Parsons, the First-Team All-Pro veteran’s brother, Stefon Diggs, the Buffalo Bills receiver, jumped on X to lash out at Scott, saying he made him look like a clown by making the statement.
Latest on Cowboys CB’s injury
Diggs sustained an injury during one-on-one red zone drills on the practice field at the Cowboys’ facility in Frisco on Thursday and was seen leaving the franchise’s headquarters on crutches. The 25-year-old was set for an MRI to determine the severity of the injury, and following the test, he was confirmed to have torn his ACL. Though a specific decision on when the NFL star may undergo surgery has not been made, the team released a statement saying he will miss the remainder of this season’s matches.
“Cornerback Trevon Diggs suffered a left knee injury during today’s practice. A subsequent MRI was performed that confirmed a torn ACL. A timetable for Diggs’ return to play has not been established, but he is currently projected to miss the remainder of the current season.”
The CB is the second starter of the Cowboys to get injured in practice since this season started, as Tyler Smith also sustained a hamstring injury before the opener. However, the left guard is expected to appear on the field in the match against the Arizona Cardinals. Now, the successful return of Diggs will be the only major concern for Dallas in the upcoming games.
