NFL Rumors: Chiefs rewarding Chris Jones with $4.25 million incentives sparks contract extension rumors

Chris Jones has undeniably emerged as a defensive powerhouse for the Kansas City Chiefs, consistently showcasing his prowess as one of the premier pass-rushing defensive tackles in football. His contributions have played a pivotal role in the Chiefs’ impressive feat of winning three Super Bowls in just five years.

The recent Super Bowl LVIII victory not only elevated the team’s status as a back-to-back Super Bowl winner but also brought financial rewards for Chris Jones.

Chris Jones receives $4.25M in incentives from Chiefs

Amidst Chris Jones’ impending free agency in March, the Kansas City Chiefs took action on Friday by exercising an option in his contract. This move grants them the ability to place the franchise tag on Jones and ensures he receives the $4.25 million he earned in incentives.

Despite the contract option, Jones still has the possibility of entering free agency if negotiations with the Chiefs fall through. The franchise tag for him is estimated to be around $32 million, with the NFL franchise tag deadline set for March 5.

According to CBS reports, projections suggest the 29-year-old could sign a three-year contract worth $85,450,884, with an average annual value (AAV) of $28.4 million. If agreed upon, this deal would make him the second highest-paid defensive tackle in the league, trailing only Aaron Donald of the Los Angeles Rams, who earns $31.6M AAV.

Given his impressive performance this season, his statistics speak volumes about his value on the field. With 10.5 sacks, 29 quarterback hits, and 13 tackles for loss, along with his contribution to the Chiefs securing their third Super Bowl ring, Jones has proven himself as a catalyst for the team’s defensive success.

Is Chris Jones staying with the Chiefs?

During the Chiefs’ Super Bowl parade, Chris Jones seized the moment to express his unwavering dedication to continuing his career in Kansas City. Addressing the massive crowd of nearly 1 million people, the defensive standout made it abundantly clear that his sole focus is on securing a third championship for the Chiefs.

“I need three of those things, baby! We ain’t done yet! We ain’t done yet! Kansas City, we will be back here next year. And for those who want Chris Jones gone, I ain’t going nowhere  baby! I will be here this year, next year and the year after,” he said.

This resolute determination stems from the challenges he faced last offseason during contract negotiations. Despite holding out through training camp and facing hefty fines, Jones garnered immense support from fans advocating for a contract extension.

While Coach Andy Reid remained hopeful for Jones’ return in Week 1 during last season, the defensive star remained steadfast in his demands, ultimately missing the regular-season opener against the Detroit Lions. Although Jones didn’t secure an extension initially, modifications were made to his deal, introducing incentives that allowed him to earn more in the 2023 season.

After returning to Kansas City under these adjusted terms, he then continued to showcase his prowess, earning his second straight First-Team All-Pro selection and securing his fifth consecutive Pro Bowl appearance.
