The news about Tyler Johnson’s potential new deal broke through NFL writer Aaron Wilson via YardBarker, with Johnson’s agency confirming the deal on Sunday. This marks a new chapter for the wide receiver, who had previously played on the Rams’ roster last season.
The veteran mainly occupied a place on the Rams’ practice squad last season. However, he was elevated to the active roster for the team’s regular-season finale against the San Francisco 49ers. He showcased his potential in that match by hauling in two receptions for eight yards and a touchdown.
The wide receiver has amassed 50 receptions for 537 yards and three touchdowns in 34 games. However, the Rams evidently see promise in the former fifth-rounder, as they have opted to retain him for another season.
Tyler Johnson may not be a headline-grabbing signing, but his rejoining of the Rams adds depth to their receiving corps. In a league where injuries and unforeseen circumstances can quickly alter a team’s roster needs, having reliable depth players like him is crucial for sustaining success.
Looking at Tyler Johnson’s career with Bucs
Tyler Johnson was selected by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the fifth round of the 2020 NFL Draft. He showcased glimpses of potential during his two seasons with the Bucs. The wide receiver started in only six out of 31 games played, but he contributed to the team’s success, including their Super Bowl victory in 2020.
The receiver amassed 48 catches for 529 yards and two touchdowns for the Bucs in regular season games, along with seven catches for 76 yards in playoff appearances. His tenure with the Bucs came to an end when he was waived by the team in August 2022.
Tyler Johnson’s journey took him through several teams in a short span of time. From signing a reserve/future contract with the Las Vegas Raiders to brief stints with the Houston Texans and a return to Tampa’s practice squad, he experienced the flux of roster changes in the NFL.
