The Philadelphia Eagles’ 2023 season took a disappointing turn after a strong start of 10-1, as their hopes for a Super Bowl victory were shattered with the firing of their defensive coach. In the midst of the coaching turmoil, the Eagles are also facing the crucial decision of determining Haason Reddick’s future with the team.
With the Eagles unable to reach a consensus on the best course of action regarding Reddick, the Cowboys have reportedly positioned themselves as frontrunners to acquire his services.
Cowboys allegedly interested in Eagles LB Haason Reddick
The Dallas Cowboys are actively dialing up potential trade packages to land coveted pass rusher Haason Reddick, according to league sources. However, Reddick’s arrival in Big D hinges on a lucrative contract extension. As he enters the final chapter of his current deal, Reddick’s camp is seeking a long-term commitment that significantly bumps up his current salary.
This Philadelphia-born edge rusher isn’t shy about his desire to don the midnight green. In a pre-season interview with CBS Sports, he spoke with the yearning of a hometown hero, expressing his fervent hope to land a long-term contract and solidify his legacy by anchoring the Eagles’ defensive line for years to come.
While Reddick’s current average annual salary of $15 million ranks 16th among edge rushers, he desires a contract that reflects his value and contributions to the team’s success. However, the looming question remains: are the Cowboys prepared to part ways with their veteran defensive lineman?
Trading one of their top defensive assets to a division rival like the Cowboys would seem unlikely for the Eagles. According to an Eagles source cited by SI, the team would prefer to avoid such a scenario if possible.
Meanwhile, Eagles general manager Howie Roseman addressed the issue while attending the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis, describing the player’s importance to the team.
“Haason obviously is an unbelievable player for the Philadelphia Eagles. Local kid, a great success story. … Love having Haason. I think that anything you’re trying to do, you’re trying to blend obviously what you’re trying to do this year and how you’re going to look in the future,” he said.
The Eagles’ coach, Nick Sirianni, also previously shared the team’s desire to continue their relationship with their vet player. Though reports indicated that Reddick had been granted permission by the Eagles to seek a trade, the player himself denies making such a request.
Nevertheless, both the Cowboys and the Eagles face similar salary cap constraints, which also pave the the way for further complications regarding any potential trade negotiations involving Reddick.
What is Haason Reddick’s current contract with Eagles?
The Eagles made a significant investment in Haason Reddick when they signed him to a three-year contract worth $45 million in 2022. As part of the contract, he received a substantial signing bonus of $14.215 million, per Spotrac.
With an average annual salary of $15 million, he ranks among the highest-paid players in his position in the league. The contract includes a total of $30 million in guarantees, all of which were fully guaranteed at the time of signing.
Haason Reddick, is poised to rake in a hefty $1 million roster bonus on March 15th, 2024. That’s not all, though. His contract is packed with an enticing escalator clause that throws in an extra $500,000 if he gets the nod for the prestigious Pro Bowl. Reddick already secured this bonus for the 2024 season by lighting up the field and making the Pro Bowl in 2023.
Nevertheless, though the sizable investment made headlines, the veteran defensive lineman is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent in 2025.
