The Houston Texans showcased a newfound resurgence in the 2023 season under the leadership of rookie sensation C.J. Stroud. The quarterback blossomed and also pushed his squad to shine brightly, leading the team to a postseason race.
The Texans playoff journey ended with a loss to the Texans, and now they have started boosting the squad for next season. The team has already inked Stroud’s formidable weapon, Dalton Schultz to a new deal. Alongside several other roster moves, they also secured linebacker Danielle Hunter.
Danielle Hunter agrees to Texans contract
Danielle Hunter has agreed to a two-year deal with the Houston Texans worth a staggering $49 million, with $48 million guaranteed per NFL Network Insiders Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero. This deal, which could potentially reach $51 million, places him among the elite earners in the league.
At an annual salary of $24.5 million, the veteran’s contract matches that of Montez Sweat, ranking him as the sixth-highest paid edge rusher in the NFL. The list of higher earners includes notable names like Nick Bosa, Brian Burns, T.J. Watt, Joey Bosa, and Myles Garrett.
The edge rusher spent the first nine seasons of his career with the Minnesota Vikings after being selected in the third round of the 2015 draft from LSU. He signed a one-year deal worth up to $20 million in the 2023 season. The Vikings were unable to retain him due to contractual constraints, leading to his highly anticipated free-agency pursuit.
The former LSU product’s return to his home state of Texas adds a sentimental touch to this deal. Growing up in Katy, Texas, this move not only brings him back to familiar territory but also positions him for continued success as he enters his age-30 season.
The signing reinforces the Texans’ defensive prowess and also addresses the departure of Jonathan Greenard. Hunter’s addition introduces Houston to an edge-rushing force comparable to the legendary J.J. Watt.
