The Arizona Cardinals selected Kyler Murray with the first overall pick in the N.F.L. draft as their potential franchise quarterback for the upcoming season, despite his diminutive stature. He did not dash their hope of being top 10 in all three last season though he appeared in only 11 games.
Unfortunately, the Cardinals had to start the season without their ray of hope franchise quarterback for his season-ending injury and now seemingly his Cardinal ship is going to be drowned very soon.
Cardinals likely to move on from Kyler Murray after NFL 2023-24
Due to an ACL tear and resulting meniscus damage in his right knee, Murray’s last season was cut short. Kyler Murray was compelled to begin the season on the PUP list as a result of his injury. Hence, he was unable to play in the Cardinal’s first four games of the season.
Despite his desire and plans, it was likely that he would not return this season. On Monday, he might have been removed from the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list, but the team wasn’t quite satisfied with his physical state. Despite the possibility, the Cardinals chose not to activate him.
In accordance with NFL rules, a team has five weeks to allow an injured player to participate in practice after he or she misses a minimum of four games while on the PUP list. If the player comes back to practice, his team gets three weeks to determine whether or not to add him to the 53-man roster; however, if the player is unable to get back on the active roster, he is obligated to stay on the PUP list and skip the rest of the season.
It has fueled rumors that the Cardinals may release their dual-threat quarterback after this season and replace him with a rookie from 2024 or another QB option.
Why Cardinals Kyler Murray on PUP this week?
Since tearing his right ACL in December, Murray hasn’t practiced and isn’t yet fully recovered for a potential comeback.
The Arizona Cardinals appear to be less hesitant about committing Murray since Joshua Dobbs has already helped them find answers for their quarterback shortage. Dobbs was acquired by the team before the start of the season via a deal with the Cleveland Browns, and since then, the Cardinals have come to rely on him for his confidence and vigor. Dobbs helped the Cardinals defeat the Dallas Cowboys in an unexpected victory.
Additionally, according to ESPN, the rationale for Murray’s prospective trade, the new general manager, and the coaching staff are all important factors. Although the 26-year-old still has a lot of prowess on his trunk, the quarterback’s team management hasn’t shown him much loyalty since they took over.
In contrast, the new team management is seemingly in a rush to rebuild the team from the ground up as they have amassed major 2024 draft capital. Hence, Kyler’s tenure in Arizona is hinting at a setback soon though the head coach Jonathan Gannon commented on a potential return of the quarterback in September.
“[We would] love to have him out there. He’s itching to be back, but we’ll take that one day at a time.”
