NFL Trade Rumors: Jets bolster squad with ex-Eagles LB Haason Reddick for conditional draft pick

Haason Reddick began his NFL journey as the Arizona Cardinals’ first-round pick. Following his stint with the Cardinals and a brief tenure with the Carolina Panthers, the seasoned edge rusher made his way to the Philadelphia Eagles prior to the 2022 season.

However, his time with the Eagles came to an end this offseason. The New York Jets have made a move to strengthen their defensive line by signing a former Eagles player, impressed by his strong displays of athleticism throughout the 2023 season.

Jets expected to bring in Haasan Reddick

The Jets and the Philadelphia Eagles are said to have engaged in a swap during the free agency period, with the Jets acquiring Pro Bowl edge rusher Haason Reddick and the Eagles having Bryce Huff.

The Jets acquired Reddick from the Eagles in exchange for a conditional 2026 third-round pick. The deal also includes provisions that could elevate the pick to a second-rounder if the former Eagles player meets specific performance criteria, including playtime and sack totals.

With the addition of Reddick, the Jets bolster their defense, addressing a key area of need following the departure of Bryce Huff in free agency. Huff, who signed a lucrative $51 million contract with the Eagles on the first day of free agency, left a void that the Jets sought to fill.

Prior to acquiring Reddick, the Jets pursued other edge rushers, including Shaq Barrett, who ultimately signed with the Miami Dolphins. The Jets later tried to bring in Jadeveon Clowney but he joined the Carolina Panthers

After a great trial to fill the void with proven talent, the acquisition of Reddick provides the Jets with a formidable presence on the edge.

The negotiation surrounding Reddick’s compensation has been ongoing since early February, when the Eagles granted him permission to seek a trade. Under the terms of the deal, the Jets will absorb $14.5 million of Reddick’s total compensation for the 2024 season, while the Eagles will account for his $1 million roster bonus due in March.

The 29-year-old is slated to earn $14.25 million in base pay during the final year of his contract in 2024. If the Jets opt not to re-sign him, they could potentially receive a compensatory draft pick in 2026 should Reddick depart as a free agent.

Haasan Reddick 2023 NFL season in numbers

Haason Reddick brings an impressive track record to the table for the Jets team. In his most recent season, Reddick showcased his prowess with 11 sacks and 38 tackles across 17 games, per NFL.com. He also boasted an impressive 74% defensive snap participation.

Nevertheless, concerns arose as he concluded the season with five consecutive games without a sack, including one playoff matchup.

Meanwhile, he has consistently been a force to be reckoned with on the field, consistently outperforming his peers as one of the league’s top edge defenders over the past five seasons, despite a brief downturn. With an impressive 52 sacks during this period, he solidifies his position as one of the top sack producers among players in his position, showcasing his lasting impact on the field.

What’s more, the Jets team has relied on its defensive prowess as a cornerstone of its success in recent times, making Reddick’s arrival a welcomed addition to bolster their defensive capabilities.
