The Buffalo Bills are now sitting in the second spot in the AFC East, behind the Miami Dolphins, with a 4-2 record. Except for going down to the New York Jets and Jacksonville Jaguars, the team enjoyed dominating victories over three other teams until week 5.
In their Week 6 match against the New York Giants, the Bills seem to be losing a piece of the puzzle. Though the Giants didn’t have their starter, Daniel Jones and starters on the offensive line, Buffalo had to toil hard to secure a win. Besides their on-field struggle, one of the controversial calls of the referee in favor of the winning team drew criticism from the NFL community.
Reviewing the controversial call in Bills vs Giants
In the absence of injured Jones, Tyrod Taylor did the quarterbacking job for the Giants. He was almost leading the franchise to a victory over the Bills when the match was nearing an end. The signal-caller threw the ball towards the end zone to score a game-winning touchdown, and tight end Darren Waller was almost on his way to ensuring his QB’s hope.
However, as caught by game replay, Buffalo’s defender Taron Johnson grabbed the TE’s jersey when he was trying to make the catch. The footage clearly showcased that Johnson was preventing Waller from lifting his left arm to grab the ball, but the referees decided to turn a blind eye. No call was there from the referee, marking one of the most controversial incidents in the NFL world.
Following the match, Darren also acknowledged the fact that it was surely a contact. Nevertheless, he didn’t want to comment on the debating decision.
“There was contact, but I’m not somebody that’s going to get into what a call should have been or telling officials how to do their job because there’s a way for me to make that play there and it wasn’t made, so that’s what I focus on.”
But, the NFL community didn’t sit quietly witnessing such a terrible call, with many expressing their outrage for not calling it a defensive holding. Even NBC rules analyst Terry McAulay said there had been enough contact for a flag to be thrown on the final play.
Josh Allen passes Brett Favre
In the Bills’ near win against the Giants, Buffalo quarterback Josh Allen recorded 2 touchdowns for 169 passing yards. With this score, he overshadowed the former NFL icon Brett Favre to become the fifth-fastest signal-caller in the history of the NFL to reach 150 career passing touchdowns, trailing only Dan Marino, Patrick Mahomes, Aaron Rodgers, and Andrew Luck.
Meanwhile, the QB had to leave the game against New York on Sunday Night Football after being pushed to the ground by Giants linebacker Bobby Okereke. The LB was called for a phantom roughing the passer penalty, and the Bills dual-threat headed to the medical tent for a checkup. He re-entered the match after missing just two plays.
Allen is fresh off his second-time AFC Offensive Player of the Week title so far this season, after a phenomenal performance against the Dolphins in Week 4. As of week 6, he recorded 13 touchdowns for 1576 yards along with a 75.0 QBR rating.
