NFL Wild Card: Steelers vs Bills playoff game officially postponed following extreme weather conditions

The Pittsburgh Steelers concluded their regular season with a remarkable 10-7 record, fueled by a stunning victory over the Baltimore Ravens. Under the guidance of coach Mike Tomlin, the team is set to face the Buffalo Bills in a bid to realize their NFL aspirations.

While fans anticipate a game played in icy conditions, the league has delivered an unexpected twist with a surprising announcement regarding this highly anticipated playoff matchup.

NFL Wild Card game between Steelers and Bills postponed

The stage was set for a thrilling wild-card playoff clash between the Buffalo Bills and the Pittsburgh Steelers. Nevertheless, nature had its own plans. A winter storm, described as potentially dangerous, caused the game to be officially postponed. It marked the first disruption in the NFL schedule this season.

As the storm threatened to unleash its wintry fury upon the Buffalo region, the NFL, along with New York Governor Kathy Hochul, had to make this tough decision. Despite previous assurances that there would be no alterations to the game’s schedule, the reality of the impending storm forced their hand.

Governor Hochul herself was much more excited for the game, as she had earlier thrown a subtle dig at Pittsburgh fans, urging them to stay home for what would be a “rough” game. Nevertheless, now she finds herself announcing the unexpected delay.

In her statement, she shared insights into the collaborative decision-making process.

“In consultation with our emergency response teams, [Buffalo Bills] leadership, and the NFL, the Bills game will be postponed to 4:30 p.m. Monday.”

The storm’s forecast was foreboding, with predictions of up to two feet of snow and gusty winds reaching 65mph. The Buffalo area, including the Bills’ home in Orchard Park, was bracing for the impact of heavy snowfall.

This isn’t the first time the Steelers have experienced a playoff game delay. In 2017, the divisional round against the Kansas City Chiefs faced a time shift from 1:00 p.m. to 8 p.m. due to an impending storm, per CBS News.

The game is not set to be held at Highmark Stadium at 4.30 pm on Monday.

Steelers vs Bill match preview

When Monday’s playoff game kicks off between the Steelers and the Bills, the weather might play its part. Nonetheless, for the Steelers, adapting to tough conditions is part of their DNA.

Pittsburgh has proven to thrive in less-than-ideal weather due to its robust running game. It has been the cornerstone of their strategy since Week 9.

Najee Harris and Jaylen Warren have been the driving forces behind Pittsburgh’s success on the ground. However, as the Steelers prepare for this crucial playoff clash, a significant obstacle looms. TJ Watt and Gabe Davis will be sidelined. Watt is dealing with a Grade 3 MCL sprain, and Davis is out with a PCL sprain.

On the other side, the Bills boast a defense that statistically outshines Pittsburgh’s. With James Cook, in their arsenal, the Bills’ defensive unit has demonstrated its prowess. Notably, they held the Chiefs to 17 points in Week 15 and limited the Cowboys’ high-class offense to a mere 10 points in Week 18.

However, it’s not just the Bills’ defense that stands out. Their offense has been a powerhouse too. After finishing sixth in the NFL in scoring during the regular season, the Bills have been on a five-game winning streak. Their offensive performance has been a key factor in this success.
