NFL’s only publicly owned franchise, Packers, report decreased profits for 2022 amidst Aaron Rodgers’ season struggles

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers former star Tom Brady and the Los Angeles Rams Matthew Stafford veteran both did justice to their last teams. The Green Bay Packers’ former star Aaron Rodgers is also now playing for the New York Jets after finalizing a blockbuster trade but is yet to prove his worth.

Aaron witnessed a diminishing performance in the last season and struggled to maintain his MVP-caliber play. However, not only did the Packers QB struggle in the last year but his franchise also had to deal with their operating profit reportedly falling from 2021 to 2022.

Packers’ profits decline in 2022

The Packers are the only publicly owned franchise in the NFL and hence, they are ‘bound’ to report their expenses and revenues each year. According to Ben Fischer of Sports Business Journal, the Green Bay-based team’s operational profits declined by 11.7 percent over the past fiscal year.

The team reportedly earned a $68.6 million operational profit, less than $77.7 million in 2021. They had a total revenue of $610.3 million and a total expense of $541.6 million.

The Packers’ net income was also down by 42%. The Green Bay squad played eight home games along with one preseason contest at Lambeau Field last season instead of playing a combined 10 regular-season as well as preseason home games. The team’s vice president of finance and administration Paul Baniel blamed one less game as the potential reason behind less local revenue,

“That extra game would have put us right around last year’s level, if not a little bit higher. It really was the difference, when you look at the operating profit and the fact it’s down that $9.1 million year-over-year.”

Green Bay suffered from Aaron Rodgers’s off-form

A-Rod completed 350 of 542 passes for 3,695 yards, 12 interceptions, along with a passer rating of 91.1 and 26 touchdowns, marking his fifth-lowest completion rate of 64.6% throughout his whole NFL career. Besides these, the season marked the 4.8% touchdown rate and 2.2% interception rate which were consecutively his third-lowest and fourth-highest.

Packers

The four-time MVP was being plagued by injuries and had to fight with a broken thumb on his throwing hand. His 5.95 Adjusted Net Yards per Attempt along with the lowest passer rating were the likely aftermath of such issues. His per-game completion percentage witnessed a downturn after the injury, and it hit the bottom zone in a match against the Detroit Lions in week 9.

The Packers missed the playoffs and their four-time MVP is now in Gang Green. With a new season approaching fast, it remains to be seen if the 39-year-old football star can lead the Jets to earn a Lombardi trophy by breaking their prolonged Super Bowl drought.
