Last year, Nick Kyrgios called himself a transformed played after winning the Citi Open singles title in Washington DC without dropping a serve across the six matches and reaching the Wimbledon finals where he lost to Novak Djokovic. But since his quarterfinal loss to Karen Khachanov at the 2022 US Open, the Aussie has played only four matches and has not played a game in 2023.
Besides that, Kyrgios is still recuperating but was given the role of a TV commentator at Tennis Channel for the ATP Finals in Turin and the tennis star gaffed almost every time he spoke on air.
Kyrgios’ x-rated slip sparks laughter
Nick Kyrgios became a crowd favourite on the tennis court because of his few wild outbursts and his quirky and larger-than-life personality as well. The Australian tennis star’s career height was when he reached the Wimbledon final last year but was defeated by Novak Djokovic in a four-set thriller.
Meanwhile, Nick Kyrgios joined the team of commentators at the ATP Finals and unfortunately it wasn’t all smooth sailing for Kyrgios as he suffered a horrible slip of the tongue while commentating Daniil Medvedev’s clash against Alexander Zverev.
“When you look at people who have had sex … success against Medvedev,” Kyrgios said. “You know Alcaraz every time he plays against him he’s moving forward taking all those volleys, taking time away … it’s crucial.”
His fellow commentators weren’t going to let the gaffe go though as they quickly pointed out the error. “Welcome to your first viral Tennis Channel moment, Nick. That was good,” Haber said. Kyrgios unaware of what he’d just said responded, “What happened?”
Haber replied, “We’ll replay it for you during the commercial.” Laughter then broke out as the awkward incident dawned on Kyrgios. “Oh I think I know, that’s hilarious,” he said.
Daniil Medvedev produced an incredible display in the contest as he booked his place in the semifinals after taking down Alexander Zverev 7-6, 6-4. World No. 3 had earlier defeated best friend Andrey Rublev in the opening game of the Red Group and is hoping to win the Nitto ATP Finals in Turin.
Nicak Kyrgios ventured into new tennis analyst job amid injury woes
Nick Kyrgios has taken on the role of commentator and analyst for The Tennis Channel at the ATP Finals in Turin. The candid tennis sensation promises to be a captivating analyst, thanks to his notoriety as one of the sport’s most controversial personalities over the last decade. Known for his unreserved expressions, Kyrgios often speaks his mind even when convention might dictate otherwise.
The press release confirmed Nick Kyrgios will be part of the Tennis Channel coverage for the ATP Final came with an interesting description of the Aussie maverick. “Nick Kyrgios, whose electric style of play and straight-to-the-point conversational approach have endeared him to millions of fans around the world, is joining Tennis Channel as an analyst during its coverage of the ATP Finals on November 12–19,” read the statement.
However, earlier last month, the Australian star announced he would be back for the 2024 Australian Open and even CEO Craig Tiley confirmed the report. But the question that remains unanswered is how the star will get back to form after not playing in a competitive event for 370 days, including the fact that he doesn’t have ranking again due to a long sideline.
