Premier League club Crystal Palace played to a 1-1 away draw at Goodison Park against Everton without their manager, Roy Hodgson. In his absence, assistants Paddy McCarthy and Ray Lewington were on the sidelines for Palace on Monday as they continued their fight to stay clear of the relegation zone.
As previously reported, former Wolfsburg and Frankfurt boss Oliver Glasner was the frontrunner to become the new head coach of Crystal Palace, following Roy Hodgson’s hospital admission due to poor health conditions. The club has now officially announced the departure of their English manager, with Glasner stepping in as his replacement.
Crystal Palace officially appointed Oliver Glasner as new manager
Oliver Glasner has been targeted by the Eagles to take over at Crystal Palace, succeeding Roy Hodgson, the Premier League’s oldest-serving manager. Amid the team’s poor form, scrutiny over Hodgson’s future with the London club intensified. An agreement had already been put in place between both parties.
Palace has confirmed the appointment of the 49-year-old, Austrian tactician on a two-year contract, running until the end of the 2025/2026 season. The club’s chairman Steve Parish stated, “I’m delighted to welcome Oliver to the club. He has an outstanding record, and we believe he is the right manager to take the club forward at this pivotal stage.”
Most recently, Glasner managed Bundesliga club Eintracht Frankfurt, guiding them to a historic feat: lifting their first-ever European trophy, the Europa League in the 2021/22 season.
He also led them to the DFB-Pokal final and the UEFA Champions League Round of 16. His impressive tenure includes spells with Wolfsburg and the Austrian outfit LASK.
“I am very happy to join Crystal Palace F.C. as manager. I am looking forward to working with the talented squad, meeting the club’s supporters, and experiencing the Selhurst Park atmosphere I have heard so much about,” Oliver Glasner said upon joining the Eagles.
Roy Hodgson resigns as Crystal Palace manager after health concerns
The English veteran Roy Hodgson came out of retirement last season to help the club successfully avoid relegation in the 2022/23 campaign. However, the 76-year-old has faced difficulty in extracting the best from his squad in recent times, including a 3-1 defeat in the London derby against Chelsea.
Following the loss in his 200th game in charge of Crystal Palace, which turned out to be his last, Hodgson had fallen ill during the club’s training session on Thursday. He was admitted to the hospital, leading the club to cancel the press conference.
Now, the former England and Watford manager has stepped down from his managerial position at Selhurst Park – the club announced on Monday, just hours before the club’s Premier League tie against Everton. The club also revealed that Hodgson is out of the hospital and is doing well.
In a statement, Hodgson said, “This club is very special and means so much to me and has played a big part in my footballing life, I have fully enjoyed my time here across six seasons, as it has given me the chance to work with top-class players and staff doing what I love every day.”
